We have just returned from a weekend break here, and were very pleased that we chose the Rufus House. Its location is great in most respects, a short walk into Lyndhurst and opposite a section of the New Forest where you can walk for miles. The only downside can be the rather noisy main road, which did disturb us on our fist night despite the traffic decreasing overnight. We were in the ground floor turret room [room 1], however, which faces onto the front carpark and road so is likely to suffer more than most of the rooms. This room is also next to the front door so we were a bit disturbed again by people coming in late. The room itself is spacious and was absolutely spotless, as was the shower room, and is comfortabley furnished, including a four-poster bed plus has a good sitting / TV area.
Probably the best thing about the Rufus though is the service, and the owners really show how it should be done. They are welcoming, friendly and you get the impression that nothing is too much trouble, with similar attitude from their breakfast staff. This type of excellent service shows the benefits of going to an owner-managed B&B / hotel over larger hotels where it is so often very different. Breakfast is fine, plentiful, and made to order, with a good choice for this size of place.
Overall we had a really good time here, and I would certainly stay again, though I would prefer a different room to have a more peaceful night. Otherwise, though, there was nothing I could see to complain about.
