We have just returned from a weekend break here, and were very pleased that we chose the Rufus House. Its location is great in most respects, a short walk into Lyndhurst and opposite a section of the New Forest where you can walk for miles. The only downside can be the rather noisy main road, which did disturb us on our fist night despite the traffic decreasing overnight. We were in the ground floor turret room [room 1], however, which faces onto the front carpark and road so is likely to suffer more than most of the rooms. This room is also next to the front door so we were a bit disturbed again by people coming in late. The room itself is spacious and was absolutely spotless, as was the shower room, and is comfortabley furnished, including a four-poster bed plus has a good sitting / TV area.

Probably the best thing about the Rufus though is the service, and the owners really show how it should be done. They are welcoming, friendly and you get the impression that nothing is too much trouble, with similar attitude from their breakfast staff. This type of excellent service shows the benefits of going to an owner-managed B&B / hotel over larger hotels where it is so often very different. Breakfast is fine, plentiful, and made to order, with a good choice for this size of place.

Overall we had a really good time here, and I would certainly stay again, though I would prefer a different room to have a more peaceful night. Otherwise, though, there was nothing I could see to complain about.

We spent three nights at the Rufus House Hotel, following the very positive recommendations on Trip Advisor. And again, Trip Advisor's reviewers did not let us down. When we arrived we were greeted by Ernesto and Etsukso, the hosts, who were utterly charming. We were made to feel very welcome. We were in room 8, which was on the top floor. The room was a little small, but it was beautifully clean and the furnishings were chic. The ensuite had a good shower and was spotless. Breakfasts were cooked to order and were a delight and there was a good choice. Although the hotel is on the main road in Lyndhurst, we cannot say we were bothered by the road noise. Our room was at the side of the hotel and had very good double glazing. Also the road does quieten down somewhat between about 11pm and 5am. The only thing that really disturbed us was the noise from the drinks 'fridge in the room, but that was minor.

Ernesto and Etsuko are the perfect hosts and always found time to chat and recommend various local restaurants (for example Prezzo and Imperial China) which were only a short walk away (about 5-10 minutes). The hotel has ample off road car parking too, which is always welcome.

We shall certainly be returning to Rufus House Hotel.

This is how service should be. I've only stayed in hotels before and was used to their 'do the least amount possible' attitude, but staying at Rufus House made me release what a difference it makes when you actually enjoy your job.
We arrived at Ashurst train station and tried to find a taxi, which prooved to be quite hard. I rang rufus house to say we would be later than the specified 12-1 check in and was told to stay where i was, and her husband would come and pick us up. WOW. Imagine that from a hotel! ha!
Everything else was perfect. A clean room. Amazingly resonable mini bar. Great breakfast cooked to order.
And we even got a lift back to the station when we left!
There is nothing I can fault here.
We went to The Rhinefield hotel on a bike ride for lunch, and the comparison was even more evident. The staff were disinterested, SLOW, there was building work going on. Beautfiul surrounding, but almost NO service.
Rufus House shows what happens when you love your job. Which made me love my holiday!

Myself and my girlfirend stayed at the Rufus House Hotel over the weekend and it could not have been a more pleasant stay. The owner was warm and welcoming and nothing seemed too much trouble. The place itself was clean and tidy. We stayed in one of the back rooms (room 5) over looking the garden and it was a lovely room, with an en-suite and nicely packed mini bar. Only a short walk from Lyndhurst with has some lovely pub and restaurants, right in the middle of the new forest and only 15 minutes drive from Southampton. This is a top little place and I would highly recommend it.

My husband and I stayed for two nights at this guest house for the bank holiday weekend. It's run by couple who seem to take a real pride in their business. The accommodation is spotless and homely. We stayed in room five, which overlooks the garden and is very private.
It's location is perfect - right opposite the New Forest and just a few minutes walk from the centre of Lyndhurst. If you're after a relaxing, affortable break in the heart of the New Forest, then this is a great place to stay.
