“Simply Superb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2012

Myself and my Partner recently visited the New Forest for a long week-end and searched for somewhere to stay. We decided on the Stag hotel, simply because it was in the middle of Lyndhurst where we wanted to be! What a great decision that turned out to be, the hotel, from the welcome when we arrived from ALL the staff, to the time we reluctantly left was fantastic. Our room (No 2) was superb, very clean and comfortable. The food, from the full English breakfast through to the Evening meal was fantastic, (you must try the Pies).
We have stayed at quite a few hotels in all catagories over the years and this is the first time I have written a review, that is how strongly I recommend this hotel.
From: Rod H and Carol T. 29-4-12

Room Tip: Room 2 Would be my choice when I return, (and I will)

Many thanks for your kind review. Since we purchased the Stag Hotel in Feb 2012 & fully gutted it & refurbished the bedrooms, bathrooms & all the bars & dinning areas we have had some excellent feed back.
This is really all down to Andrew Jones our Manager at the Stag Hotel, who has worked really hard to coach & train his staff over the last few months. I will pass on to him and his team your excellent comments.

Many thanks

We booked this last minute with no great expectations other than a convenient spot for some cycling in the new forest. However, our experience of the accomodation, hospitality & food at the Stag puts most larger hotels to shame, and at a fraction of the price! The check-in experience was friendly & relaxed, the breakfast (included in the price) was fabulous & nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely return.

Thank God we only had one night to endure the depressing dark tired room with a bathroom that had the worst smell due to the extractor fan not working and the WC being blocked, the smell is still lingers in my nostrils 8 hours after checking out. Even though the bed linen was clean the actual duvets smelt of feet and body odour. The room may have been ok 30 years ago when I suspect it was last updated.
On the plus side the staff were very polite and the breakfast very good. I really think the owner should upgrade the bedrooms to a better standard if they intend to keep the customers happy. Also a hand rail on the narrow staircases would be a good idea and lighting in the entrance when guests arrive back in the evening would be a great plus !!! I would never stay at this hotel again .... overpriced at £95 for a twin room,

Room Tip: Not aware there is one !

We could only stay here the one night couldn't face another. Booked a double room at £95 when we arrive they didn't have a double for us but they would let us use the honeymoon suite for £105. This consisted of a toilet that wouldn't flush and a dirty room. There were used sanitary towels in the bathroom and the neatly made bed hid the blood stains on the quilt. The double bed was only two singles pushed together making sleeping really uncomfortable. We would not recommend this hotel and at a normal price of £95 is far too expensive for the poor quality provided.

I stayed one night to visit an event at the National Motor Museum next day. My single room turned out to be a reasonable-sized double with a good bathroom. Staff (especially Alex and Beryl) were very helpful and the breakfast (included in my £50) was excellent.
I ate in the Spanish-style restaurant and was pleasantly surprised again by the quality and value; the word needs to get around Lyndhurst as it was very quiet on a Saturday evening!
It's also an excellent base for the New Forest (almost literally on the doorstep).
All in all - you get what you pay for here and I would return; if you want five star prices. go elsewhere!

Overall the hotel is reasonable but the mattress in my room was obviously old and had become very uncomfortable. I found it difficult to sleep and was not very refreshed in the morning. I would not stay in this hotel again. There are plenty of nice B&Bs in Lyndhurst for similar or lower price.

It was my 4th different bed that week while away on business-the beds and pillows are cheap and uncomfortable. Shower in the eaves, so if you are over 4'11'' there is no way to stand under it.
Breakfast allegedly starts at 7.30am, but there was no sign of life at that time of the morning on either day. The whole place was locked up which made exiting to work a novel experience.
Had dinner one night, the tapas were passable ate in a pub the next. Modernised interior leads one into a false sense that the place is better than it actually is. It could do alot better.
