“Always excellent!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

The Mandarin Chef is not exactly our local Chinese Restaurant - it is several miles away but is the one we have been going to for years now - we are now welcomed as old friends whenever we go! Whether we go for a take away or a full meal sitting in the restaurant, the quality is always consistently good, the setting is pleasant and the proprietors & staff are always friendly and welcoming. I would have no hesitation in recommending The Mandarin Chef!

“Always excellent food and friendly service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

My girlfriend and I have now been to the Mandarin Chef a lot of times with groups of friend, family and for take away and the food has ever disappointed. The all-you-can-eat option is brilliant and rather than a buffet they will bring dishes from the menu that you request and you can order multiple times. All of the staff are friendly and the large tables with the lazy susans in the middle can be requested and definitely make the passing around of food easier!

The only minor (and it is very minor) quibble would be that the decor is not particularly modern however it always clean and tidy and a great place to eat. Although it can get busy it is not too crowded and you never feel too cramped even with all the tables filled.

We have been here multiple times and never had a bad trip, it always lives up to it's reputation.

“A very nice meal a good place to eat out :)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

I pass this resturant fairly regulary and have always fanced viisiting it. I decided to go tonight and as usual I had a look at the reviews on here - so I telelphoned and booked a table .

I mentioned on the telephone that I had some food alergies, garlic, chilly and spices and she said it should not be a problem she was confident they could . I was impressed that whom ever took the call already knew a couple of dishes I could not have.

When we arrived we mentioned our alergy and it was not a problem we looked thorugh the menu and worked out what we could have - all not problem and no fuss, we were made to feel very welcome.

The food was really good, nice portion size, hot and served in a decent time :) Service was good, friendly helpful and not too intrusive

We will be visiting again :) I would reccomend this resturant

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

The good reviews here encouraged us to try the Mandarin Chef, not having visited for many years. It was quiet on our arrival but that soon changed and people flocked in to make this a busy restaurant on a Tuesday night. So with positive signs of a popular restaurant we were looking forward to a good meal.

We chose from the A La Carte menu and started with Crispy Fried Duck which was very acceptable. Our two mains of Sweet and Sour Chicken and Pork with Green Pepper and Chilli were very disappointing. Both were presented in a cloyingly heavy and rich sauce and the chicken hidden within the crisp hard batter was completely over cooked. There was no pepper with the Pork and it was thickly sliced and very unappetising although that is personal preference.

To their credit they did not charge us for the Sweet and Sour Chicken but the experience was disappointing although the customers in this busy restaurant appeared to be enjoying their meals. Perhaps we were unlucky but I rather suspect that the cloyingly heavy sauces heavily influenced with tomato ketchup are their norm.

“Pressure to clear your plates”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012

We visited this restaurant the other day after meaning to for some time.
We were offered a choice of menu or buffet and opted for the buffet, as seemed a good deal.
However, after reading the buffet rules and regulations you do feel pressure to abide by the rules.
In short, you can order as much as you like from the extensive list, but no more food will be given until all plates are clean. ( felt like a child again at meal times! )
I do wish they operated a serve yourself buffet as others we have been to, and feel although the food is very good, the pressure to eat it all up is ever present.
We probably will go again at some stage, but with a larger group to help eat all the food up!
