“Lovely food, accommodation a little cramped”

Berties Restaurant and Rooms

I needed a simple B & B for an overnight stay near Bournemouth Airport. Had I read the previous reviews before booking, I wouldn't have stayed there, but in the event, I enjoyed it. The room (No. 7) was cramped, as stated by previous Tripadvisors, there was no wardrobe, and I had to hang my clothes over the chair back. The bed was one of those "firm but good for the spine" cripplers and I slept badly.

However the bathroom was clean and tidy and the shower very good. The restaurant stayed open quite late (9:15), I was made welcome, the meal was truly delicious and service excellent; breakfast likewise. There's a proper espresso machine too.

In other words, room a little substandard, but the food made up for it. B & B cost £50.

“An embarrassment to Romsey”

Berties Restaurant and Rooms

I am writing this as a very embarrassed Romsonian who needed to book an American colleague into somewehere near my home. I picked on Bertie's, largely based on Paddy Burt's original review and because I'd heard locally that the food was OK. What a mistake.

I booked over the phone, and said that my colleague would be arriving at about 10pm. They didn't seem too keen on the late arrival, but said Ok. At 9.30pm on the night he was due to arrive, they called me at home and asked when he was arriving and said that it was a quiet night and they wanted to go home.

When he arrived his room was freezing cold. He said the state of the coffee maker meant that he didn't feel able to make a coffee - full of what he described as 'brown gunge'.

We contemplated checking him out after the first night, but were too pressed for time to organise anything, so he stayed for a 2nd night. We phoned during the day to insist that the room was to be warm when we returned, which it was.

They insisted he pay the night before he left, although he was not leaving until 9am. I arrived early to pick him up, while he was having breakfast, and the breakfast was good. I was offered a coffee by a passing staff member. With the exception of this one gesture the staff simply seemed to be resentful that they were there with us inconveniencing them. A phone was ringing for ages and there was a discussion between staff about who should answer it that lasted until the phone stopped ringing, thus negating the need for the conversation in the first place.

As we left, we called out 'good bye'. The staff were in earshot......but there was a deafening silence in response.

We were extremely disappointed with our stay at Berties. It turned out to be one of the worst places we have stayed at in years.
Room 9 is very cramped and you can't even open the wardrobe door without moving the bedside table first. As the room is so small, if you want to make a cup of tea ,the kettle has to sit on the floor. There was nowhere to sit in the room....not even to watch the World Cup!! We had booked for two nights and had to stay out till late before returning to go to bed because there was nowhere comfortable to sit and relax in the hotel.
The bathroom was dated with a tiny shower and basin. Some of the plumbing was held together with string. There was no bathroom shelf so nowhere to put your toiletries unless you count the toiletry bag on the toilet seat! The decoration was generally a bit tired and shabby.
Bed linen and towels were clean but they had provided only one towel for the first night.
Breakfast was well presented
At £75 this is overpriced for the standard of the accommodation.
Overall an all round disaster. Oh did I forget to mention the narrow entrance and the scratched car paintwork!

“do not stay here!!”

This place was a huge disappointment! We stayed on a sunday evening so were unable to have a meal which was not a problem as 'Prezzo' over the road was very nice. Our no smoking room smelt strongly of smoke. We were charged £100 for the night and looking on the internet then found rooms were £65! The bathroom was very grotty, there wasn't even a shelf so had to put all our toilettries on the floor. We could hear next doors t.v very clearly until 11.45pm Our t.v was unwatchable as the reception was terrible. The bed squeaked everytime we moved and the springs in the very cheap mattress were not very nice. To top of an uncomfortable nights sleep we were unable to have a shower as there was no hot water, when i phoned the manager he said there was nothing he could do about it, he didn't even have the courtesy to deduct anything from over over priced room rate. The breakfast was quite nice and I have heard the food in the evenings is nice but wouldn't ever wish to go back there. If we had paid £50 we wouldnt have expected too much but we feel we were ripped off.

“great service lovely room”

Booked a 2 night stay for my girlfriend's birthday after seeing a great review by Paddy Burt in the Telegraph. We were met by a charming Frenchman who showed us to our room and carried our bags. He turned out to be the head waiter who also helped on the bar. Our room was spacious and light with a nice sofa and smart en-suite bathroom. So while my girlfriend had a long soak in the bath I went down and had a beer at the bar. There was a comfortable conservatory with leather tub chairs but I elected to stay at the bar and watch the hub-bub as a Saturday night got under way. It is obviously a really popular restaurant with the locals which is always a good sign and our meal later in the evening was absolutely delicious - couldn't fault it! The owner David was friendly and even bought us a drink at the bar later in the evening to celebrate the birthday. Next morning he cooked our breakfast too!! We would definately recommend this restaurant with rooms and will be returning with friends in the future. Only downside is that the entrance to the car park is really narrow and judging by the scrapes on the wall, catches out a few customers!
