“Noise from refrigeration unit made the room vibrate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013 via mobile

Was booked in for six nights managed to stay just the one. I had read other reviews and was a little concerned but the location was good for me so on arrival was met by two staff one being new which is a fair call we all got to start sometime good luck to that lady by the way. I entered the room to find as others have stated it all looked very tired and I'm need of decorating. Cleanliness was poor at best. Yucky toilet. Not nice. But the issue with room. 32 is its beside the refrigeration unit the noise vibrated throughout the room just knew I would not sleep through that. So went to complain. Apparently the hotel was full and I would be moved the next day for the rest of my stay. So like a fool I had a very restless nights sleep and went to reception in the morning to be told they had no other suitable room to offer. A man who had room. 11 was also complaining. Food was good both in the evening and breakfast. Would I go back. Not a chance.

This hotel is in a great location, situated in Havant town centre, free parking and a few minutes walk from railway station. We caught the train from Havant to Gunwarf Quays to do shopping.

The hotel food was fine and staff were pleasant, but the hotel its self is very run down, with odd carpets (well worn) everywhere, our room was not clean, thick layer of dust over the mirror, in the bathroom the taps on the bath and sink did not have the hot and cold disks on them so it was difficult to work out which tap was which. The wardrobe only had 6 coat hangers in it, you could not plug in the hairdryer next to the mirror as the plug socket was too low down on the dressing table that the plug would not go in.

It is such a shame that this hotel has not had any investment as it is in a great location. Doubt that we would return.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking carpark are quite as hotel is on a road with some traffic.

Thankyou for taking the time to comment. I can only apologise for the standard of cleanliness. The building is indeed old and GreeneKing do operate a full investment programme which we are hoping will get around to us in the not too distant future. On a positive note I am glad that you enjoyed the food and that the staff were notibly pleasant.

stayed 3 nights,27 to 29 august.have stayed in many old english hotels, some good some
not so good.obviously the bear is a bit dated but we had a most enjoyable stay.the food
in the restaurant was varied and great value.the scallops and fish and chips for a tenner
i mean come on.we stayed in room 49,clean,and nice and quiet.the staff were good
notably ryan and the two young girls.for those who want to venture out we recommend
the maypole pub on main road in to hayling island, fontwell races, and a day trip in to
portsmouth via the rail.
thanks for a lovely stay.

Room Tip: top floor quiet

I stayed here as a lastminute booking, despite some issues finding our booking as a previous receptionist had given our room to someone else, Ryan quickly sorted it, we stayed in room 34 and the reason for swapping was soon apparent, the vent from the kitchen was outside the window but it was switched
around 10pm so wasnt a problem. Slept like a baby and breakfast was great they even made me some sandwiches to take as we left early (before breakfast), the restaurant was quiet and I thought it was a little overpriced but if you go out there is plenty of choice in the nearby high street. Good parking but you need to find the entrance round the back which could be tricky!

A good all round hotel and I would sray again.

Stayed here for one night room was basic and in need of an update but overall a clean comfortable bed, towels where nice an white not like some hotels we've stayed in! absolutely wonderful friendly staff . We had our evening meal which was great value for money for a three course . The breakfast was just as nice with a selection of meals, fruit and cereal, we would go back.

I stayed here for one night wih my mum and my two children as we wanted to spend 2 days at Hayling Island. we were welcomed by such fantastic staff they made us feel so welcome. We had a family room which was a great size with beautiful white bed linen. Yes the room is a little dated but for the price and the wonderful staff it did not matter. The breafast was amazing such great choice and again lovely staff who could not help us enough. Looking forward to going back next year.
