Description: The Phoenix is a historic and magnificent building in a prime location, with a large car park and a beautiful, peaceful garden. The food is simple, fresh, as much as possible local. Andrew Ryder, chef proprietor is passionate about provenance and seasonality. The menu changes frequently, to allow for seasonal favourites. The service is friendly and informal, staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. There is always a good selection of real ales and the extensive wine list suits all tastes and pockets.

“The Best pub Sunday lunch we have ever tasted”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

A little background - together with a group of close friends we enjoy a (fairly) bracing monthly Sunday morning walk in our SW Surrey/North Hampshire area, followed by pub lunch. Over the years we have been subjected to a wide variety of meals purporting to be top quality lunch...many have been good to very good, some have been OK to dire. Yesterday (November 11, 2012), the couple responsible for organising the walk and booking the lunch, chose The Phoenix. Coming from Hartley Witney they knew the pub well, so we were optimistic. Despite a slightly longer than usual wait for the reserved table, and an equivalent wait for the main course (maybe not helped by me being the only one to have a starter, unable to resit the oysters) The roasts, and my local hog meat sausage and mash, were nothing short of superb. Tender, well-cooked meat from a Hook butcher, fresh and beautifully cooked vegetables, different gravies for the pork, lamb and chicken ( not that I've never known before), charming and attentive staff, all at a very reasonable cost. The plum crumble, bread and butter pudding and local ice cream were also 5*. And no, this glowing review was not influenced by my wife winning a large joint of gammon in the meat raffle. Major recommendation for The Phoenix and the owners, who do it all.

“Roast to die for”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

We are relative newcomers to this restaurant, having only visited for the first time in September 2012 - but having now been 3 times - each time as good - the staff are friendly, the ambience is excellent and the food is very good. We last went on Sunday and had the roast chicken - fabulous. Would definately recommend to anyone.

“Best roast chicken I can remember”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012 via mobile

Around 10 of us ate here one Sunday afternoon. I had half a chicken (1 breast, 1 leg) and it was brilliantly tasty. Legendary cauliflower cheese, crispy roasties, I could not fault it. The chef came out of the kitchen to check whether we wanted any more veg. A nice touch. But it seems the secret is out as it was busy without being too crowded. I can't wait to return. Luckily I live 1 mile away.

“Steak night with a difference”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

Thursday night steak night to share a chateaubriand however, they'd run out. I asked the waiter how this could possibly be as it was only 8.30pm. Answer: " we've already cooked ten." I ventured that if the Chateaubriand is a speciality of the Phoenix and tonight was steak night, would they not think to keep a few more in the fridge? Next answer: " Well it's steak night you see and if you'd wanted steak you should have come on a different night."
Anyway, the four of us muddled through with the one rib of beef that was available and, a couple of standard steaks. The rib was very good and the steaks nothing special.
We decided that cheese and biscuits would finish things off nicely but hang on:- " we've run out of cheese biscuits!"
Ok, it's coffee time and we asked if we could be served them outside on the terrace so the smokers could get their fix. Answer: " No you're not allowed to take your coffee outside."

Note to Kitchen - Get adequate stock in
Note to staff - Get over yourselves
Note to self - Don't waste £50 on a Taxi going to a second rate pub
