“Perfect location, service and price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012 via mobile

Stayed here for one night - perfect location in the centre of Alton with car parking, service was superb, rooms clean, and the breakfast was fantastic. Would definitely stay here again. The hotel has an interesting history too, especially for any ghost hunters!

The beds were fine and rooms are average, but I would avoid staying here if you don't like cold bathrooms. The breakfast however is very good and location is great- right on the high street. It felt more like a B&B than a hotel. If you're looking for simple accommodation and conveniently located, then the Crown hotel is fine. If you're looking for luxury, look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for one with good heating!

After visiting several loca pubs, for an evening meal, we decided on the The Crown. The restaurant is small and cosy with a limited choice of food but what was delivered was very good. The meat meals are presented on wooden platters not plates. You can't beat a plate to stop the food falling on to the table. A good choice of beers and nice to have it served as beer and not as an ice cold lager. Did not stay in the hotel

The Crown was selected due to its location, bang in the middle of Emsworth, perfect for visiting relatives.

Our room was very very tired. The recently installed managers, Paul & Veronica, at all times were friendly and helpful. On being shown to The Ship {all the rooms are named} we found that the last set of stairs were quite steep and would be not suitable for those with less than adequate locomotion. In addition the penultimate step to the landing is loose, beneath the carpet.

The initial impression is not good. It is the one room in the hotel which one steps up to enter, meaning one has to, in that age old favoured pub sign, "duck or grouse". The carpet, which is common to the rooms and public areas in the hotel, is a disgrace. Speaking with the ever helpful managers, and having taken note of the signs on the walls upstairs, we learned that there has recently been an ingress of water. Once the roof has been sorted a refurbishment will take place. I believe that means the whole place, it needs it.

Well, that cannot come too soon. The Ship had some good things, all the lights worked {including shaving mirror}, towels were good and it had a bed. {Some moron had scratched the screen of the television, one presumes simply checking the diamond they'd recently been given was genuine}

The 'en-suite' is a corner of the room that was pinched to have a shower, sink and khazi installed many moons ago. It is small. So, when the owners, who I was informed are 'Merlin Hotels near Guildford' {they allegedly have a stable of 17} got hold of the Crown why not simply switch the door to the en-suite to open outwards, not inwards, it isn't difficult and could be sorted in an hour.

There's a new extractor fan, tiling has been tarted up, so why not think about making maximum use of space in what is a cramped area in the first place. Really needs ripping out and starting anew.

Breakfast is poor. It is in addition to the room rate, fair enough. A menu is on the table listing cereals, fruit, fruit juice, yoghurt, cooked options, BUT nothing is on show a la breakfast buffet that one expects to be the norm in this day and age. As a consequence each decision is precursed by a question of what is available. Tiresome for everybody.

There is room for a table to be set with the cold options, for self selection. That being the case human nature would take over as people'd have cereals etc, plus something cooked, rather than , as in my wifes case in particular, 'I really cannot be bothered'!

Extraordinarily the coffee is v. good as witnessed by a procession of local husbands and wives popping in during the morning to partake of same.

As another reviewer has noted approvingly Thursday is 'open mic' night. The music lasts until 23.00/15ish, and if you like you can either listen to the music in the bar with a drink, or lie in bed and hear the enthusiastic offerings echo into the night. I am told by the perpetually enthusiastic Paul that the live music on Friday is even louder and lasts until midnight!

I asked Paul where to get some copying done, no problem, Veronica did it for me in their office , no charge. The Crown has, I feel, to decide what it wants to be, a lively pub that entertains the younger elements of Emsworth {for those who've never visited I would suggest the percentage of octogenarians amongst its' population is well above the national average}, with a function sweet, or be serious about attracting visitors. That to my mind would be, in general, biz people visiting locally plus Portsmouth/Chichester during the week and the leisure trade weekends.

I would imagine that there are a number of habituees of The Crown that the new management team have inherited, provide a certain core income and may resent too much alteration. That to my mind can be the only explanation for my happening to witness {whilst I had to fetch something from the car} a meat delivery to the chef, out of the boot of a Mondeo {box of chicken I think}. Thinking this may have been an emergency I thought, nothing too harmful there. Only thing, another delivery from the same vehicle next day. Frankly in this day and age of food standards in storage and preparation, that ain't good enough, and there are 2 good butchers not more than 75 yards from the front door.

I wish management very good luck in the future, once all concerned have made up their minds what they want the business and the building to be.

We stayed here in July 2012. I would not do so again. The room seemed clean enough, but the furnishings were dated and frankly had seen better days. When we came down for breakfast the next morning, there was no-one about. Having waited for almost half an hour from when the breakfast that we had already paid for was due to have commenced, we packed up and left without having eaten. I would hope there are better places to stay in Alton.

Just had a 2 night stay at this hotel while visiting the boat show, Walked in to reception where i was met by this friendly, witty, man who later i found out was the manager Paul. Rooms clean and tidy, bathroom the same spotlessy clean and well presented. The bar was oozing entertainment with an open mic night which was full of talented musicians, the food was excellent and presented to a high standard Hotel is situated in the town of Emsworth a beatiful and charming postcard harbour town with plenty of pubs and restaurants. Would recommend this to others of any age it was fun and entertaining. Will definately be returning to this hotel !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to be clear, did not stay in the hotel, only ate there so reviewing the bar area only.
Arrived about 1.00pm for sunday lunch and was warmly greeted by the staff, was served quickly and given the menu for that days offerings. Found the menu a bit limiting with there only having a choice of 4 starters, sunday lunch and 3 deserts. The food was actually very good and have no complaints about the service. It has to be said that it was very quite that day and the atmosphere the bar had a few years ago seems to have gone. However, for some good, no frills and honest food, this is the place and given that there are many fine places to eat in this wonderfull little village, thats saying something. Our bill for 2 x 2 course lunches and 2 drinks each came to £40.00.
