“Modern, clean, friendly and great for a stopover”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

We were staying here as it was a family 50th birthday party in Bordon, about 10 miles away. The location did throw us a little bit, as although we knew it was a way out of Alton town centre, our mobile phone signal decided to take a holiday (mentioning no networks by name!) and I'd not printed out the details. Anyway, once we'd carried on down the road a little we found it (difficult to miss it!), parked up and checked in. The receptionist was friendly and efficient and told us what we needed to know about breakfast times etc.
Our room was down a rather warren-like succession of corridors, but we eventually got there; it was, admittedly, a rather compact room, but frankly, for the amount of time we were going to be there (just an overnight stay and we were going straight out) it was absolutely fine. It was very clean, obviously newly kitted-out; the bathroom, again, was very clean, new and modern.
There have been some comments about the noise travelling quite a lot in this hotel. We did hear some noise from our neighbours, and from the shower in the next door room, but it didn't disturb us at all once asleep. The bed was comfortable, as was the room temperature.
Breakfast the next morning was a bit manic; we were some of the last to arrive, but there was still plenty of food available (the breakfast bar is a sort of "help yourself" carvery-style). Not sure if the staff weren't expecting quite such a breakfast stampede, as the coffee and orange juice did keep running out, but they were definitely working hard to keep up!
The morning receptionist again was very chatty and pleasant when we checked out.
I would recommend the Angel to others on the basis of our visit as we were very pleased with the service we received and the quality of our stay.

Room Tip: Rooms 118 to 121 (I think) are quite compact, but absolutely fine!

We wanted a place to stay for one night in the south of England. The Angel was priced competitively so we booked it, and we were not disappointed.

The lady on reception when we arrived was very friendly and helpful. We were allocated a room on the first floor overlooking the car park. It was clean, in good state of repair and we got a good night's sleep. We heard no noise from other guests (but I'm not sure if there was anybody staying in the next room).

We didn't stay for breakfast because we needed to be away early but we did eat there in the evening. The carvery was amazing value for £5!

Make sure you check in before 9pm if you intend to eat there in the evening.

We would definitely stay again if we were in that part of the country again.

This hotel is very good value for money. It is clean, comfortable and the staff are very helpful. The bar/restaurant area is a good place to relax in the evening and the meals reasonably priced. Last order for dinner is 9pm so beware if expecting to check in late. That said, I arrived at about ten past nine and the staff were able to make sure that I was fed! Breakfast is a choice of hot breakfast or continental buffet - both charged in addition to the room.

Please be aware that the hotel is about 1o miles from Alton and is located pretty much on its own, so walking to anywhere in the evening is not practical. Ideal for a one night business trip stop over for Alton though.

By the way the bath and sink plugs work by pushing in once to 'plug' and pushing in a second time to 'unplug'!

Room Tip: Get a family suite or double room if you can

Stayed at The Angel, Alton for one night and had a fantastic time. The room was very clean and comfortable and the bathroom was to die for. We had a carvery which exceeded all our expectations. The only possible fault I could find was that the toaster was very slow to toast the bread at breakfast. Apart from that it was the best hotel I have been to for ages. Gemma, Surrey

Reasonable prices for rooms and very good value carvery, especially for only a fiver! Rooms OK but they were built so that the bedrooms were the other side of a very thin plaster board wall to next doors bathrooms/loos and you could hear everything that was going on in there at 03.00 in the morning...yuk!

Bathrooms very poor as shower in bath wedged in to a sloping roof so you had to bend down and lean over to get wet. who on earth designed these needs taking out and ...........? Bed reasonably comfy. If you are going to stay, ask to stay in rooms in main building as outbuilding not up to standard overall. Nice and close to ports so if traveling from the north, a good place to stop off the night before.

Room Tip: Ask for room in main building where you can't hear the guy next door using the loo!

Ok this was meant to be a birthday treat for my boyfriend and a recuperation break as he'd just had a op. To start with The Angel isn't in Alton .... it's approx 8 miles from it !! We kept driving into the middle of nowhere and decided to give The Angel a ring to find out if we were heading in the right direction only to find we couldn't get a signal on our phones so we had to drive into Alton to be able to do this. The " Inn " is in the middle of nowhere to start with . When we arrived we were told that they didn't do room service and the kitchen was only open until 9pm - so we had 10 mins . Their Al a Carte menu was pub grub so we opted for the carvery . Chef wasn't in so there was 2 young lads doing their best . Veg etc had seen better days then the lads came out and topped them up with fresh veg . Carvery was ok. We wanted another drink after eating so i stood at the bar and waited , after i made a comment the barman ( who was chatting to friends ) heard me asked if i wanted serving and if i did " to get up here then " . This didn't impress me . We decided to go to our room , which we hadn't seen . More disappointment - iron and ironing board stuck in corner , sheet didn't fit properly , wardrobe was a wall mounted coat rack and the creme de la creme......... couldn't stand up in shower , which was positioned over bath , as it was mounted on a sloping ceiling . After a lousy nights sleep , walls are paper thin could hear the toilet habits of next room , we were up and checked out before 8am. i had booked B & B for 2 nights . Didn't stay for breakfast or 2nd night . Totally disappointed. How this can be classed as an inn is beyond me IT'S A MOTEL !!!!! When the reception staff asked why we were leaving early they were not at all surprised by our complaints.
Bottom line is if you like being miles from nowhere , and you haven't high expectations then give it a go . if not stay well away !

Initial trepidation after reading some reviews, as the boyfriend booked it last minute, as every other hotel locally (with pools which we both love) was booked out.

There's a separate block of outside rooms, and by far the best are the ones at the back for peace & quiet, rather than the ones over looking the car-park.

Rooms and ensuite, were clean but its tight fit, ie not spacious, while there's a dresser and small cupboard, this place isn't aimed a long stay (no where to put large suitcases) - but a night or few, no complaints.

I would echo other reviews, the wall insulation makes the room walls very 'thin' - I don't think neighbouring guests had the tv on loud but we could hear it, and them talking - both sides, without straining both in the bathroom and bedroom. Also a phone on vibrate (not ours) but either above or to our side, we could hear that too, and while we don't have super hearing and we ourselves put on the tv low, we were conscious if we could hear them, they could hear us. For a new build outbuilding, soundproofing is clearly something that can't be changed.

BUT we got a deal for £39.95 in April at the last minute - don't get a shock as we did, breakfast is charged at £7.50 extra each, albeit a full decent English breakfast, fruits, and breads, toasts, muffins, cereals on offer, making this per night stay as in B&B about £55 per night per couple. This is of course still way cheap compared to the rest of the area. But I might have gone without breakfast had I known it was charged, as I didn't eat anywhere near the £7.50 cost.

I think it is reasonable to say The Angel is priced to reflect local competition which offers far more, so don't go with high expectations, but be pleasantly surprised at the tranquility (baring your neighbouring guests) and clean rooms. We'd stay again for the cheapness (if we get that deal again)

Incidentally the carvery was fantastic value at £5 (!) each (or £8 on Sunday lunchtime), and the pub meals are no gastronomy, but staple pub fare: pies, fish and chips, steak, typically English.

There are NO one site facilities other than it belongs to a pub. And the staff were all pleasant and polite.
