“Fantastic space in Salford Quays”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

The Lowry has always been a fantastic space, and it's great to see that in the last few years, it's been getting a lot more usage!

The galleries often have one-off displays from major London galleries (usually for free/a donation) in addition to the stunning collection of L.S. Lowry pictures.

The theatres are both fantastic spaces, offering some of the best stages and seats in the UK in my opinion (and I review theatre a lot!).

The centre itself is of a great design, and the Lowry Outlet Mall is great to poke around in, so long as you're not too hung up on brand names. It can be a bit hit and miss, but in the Cadbury's Shop, you're always on to a winner! ;-)

Jump off at Salford Quays metrolink for a gorgeous walk up the Quay, or else MediaCity UK / Harbour City / Broadway if you want to get there promptly. From Manchester, you can get any tram going to either Media City UK, or to Eccles.

“Rather more than 'Matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs'.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We went primarily to see the art gallery in which L S Lowry's paintings are displayed but discovered that there's so much more to see and do than just that one location.
For a start there's shopping a-plenty, lots of cafes, bars and restaurants, plenty of culture plus the northern outpost of the Imperial War Museum, and the whole area of the regenerated Salford quays to walk round and generally admire.
There's also plenty of parking though it's not the easiest to find, and it's quite well served by public transport. For footie fans, it's not much more than a stone's throw from Old Trafford.
The Lowry gallery itself is free (donations solicited - put your hand in your pocket, it's worth it.)
Our visit coincided with a major exhibition covering the whole of Lowry's work including some pictures from other galleries. There's an informative introductory film which lasts about 20 minutes and puts the artist into context. The rooms were arranged thematically with the paintings and drawings well hung, not too crowded and with informative captions. We also took advantage of one of the free gallery talks by one of the curators - informative, lively and worthwhile.
Downstairs there's the usual shop and a place for coffeee and snacks.
The Gallery is situated in the arts complex which also includes a theatre etc. Decor a bit 'in your face' but the staff are friendly.
The whole area may be a bit too new and too modern for some, but it has plenty to offer and we enjoyed it.
