Fascinating Tudor mansion with a long history that has been well restored. Plenty of background information and a beatiful garden. The house has a wonderful atmosphere, sitting in the middle of a suburban area only ten minutes or so from the centre of Manchester via the metro link. The staff are excellent, helpful and knowledgeable, and I enjoyed exploring the house and learning about its past including the ghost of the white lady. Historical legend says that Guy Fawkes came here to plan the gunpowder plot. It captured my imagination, particularly the Great Hall dating from 1500/ There is a small shop and cafe with very reasonable prices, the guidebook at £3.50 is a very good read, especially considering it is free to enter the house.
