Tis hiddeen gem is tranquil. Great prking and the most spectaclar views. You are so high up the planes pass like cars! The view goes go and on. Take a picnic. Drink it in. A great free afternoon. There is a splendid war memorial garden. No litter, no graffiti, love it!

“On top of the world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013 via mobile

The views from Werneth Low are absolutely breathtaking, and there is something up there to suit all tastes, from the beauty of nature and wildlife to the solemnity of the moment if you climb to the cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday and join with the crowd in honour of those whose lives were lost in war.

A walk up to the highest point is recommended at dusk, when the scene is one of millions of twinkling lights as far as the eye can see. The sunsets are pretty spectacular too.

Don't forget to take your kite (single line only allowed) and try spotting the aircraft (one every 2 mins), so low you can almost touch them, on their descent to Manchester Airport.

“Amazing views, average country park. Parking can be a struggle.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

Visited for the first time on a sunny Sunday morning.

Armed with a walking route downloaded from the Tameside council website we set off into the park. The country park itself is very average indeed, consisting mainly of open fields with a few small patches of woodland. Hardly inspiring.

However, after less than 100 metres walking you find yourself rising above the adjacent buildings, and are rewarded with spectacular views over the surrounding towns and cities. From the cenotaph war memorial you can see over Manchester and Salford to Winter Hill in the distance, with Stockport and Oldham on either side. Further around are the Pennine foothills, with beautiful peaks and valleys.

We arrived at the Lower Higham visitor centre car park at around 11am and it was already busy, with only a few spaces left. Once we returned at 1pm, cars were queuing to park. We walked past a second car park named 'quarry', which seemed to have more room and was only 15 minutes wander from the visitor centre. The parking was free.

The visitor centre itself opened at 1pm, and had a small canteen selling hot drinks and chocolate bars. There was also the opportunity to buy books detailing walks in the local area.

This place is an essential visit for anyone familiar with the geography of Manchester - not for the average park itself but for the spectacular views of the entire county.

“Outstanding views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

I take my dog here daily, a good walk with outstanding views, there is two car parks so not a problem if you are bringing the car.
