“5 day Shearings holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

The food was always of a good quality and very well presented. The staff in the restaurant were very polite and helpful, as were all the staff we saw in the hotel. Our room was clean and towels changed daily. Recently refurbished, very comfortable.
The castle in Berkeley is well worth a visit as is the little village there. Also Sharpness docks had excellent picnic area with views over river severn. Plenty to do within the area.

Room Tip: Ask for the castle suite, massive room and very comfortable, a real home from home!

very typical shearings hotel. very scruffy bedroom and bathroom i.e. are bath panel was held together with sellotape....... when i showed housekeeper she said they were aware of it!!!!!!!!!!!! i had to get them to change bedcover on arrival as it was full of previous occupants stains. the pillows stank and also were badly stained. these were removed and never returned. hairdryer fell apart in my hand to which i did have a hand held one given to me by reception but the one in room is still there and unfixed with no notice on it to warn next occupant. Food was good except you didnt get enough of it. 2 tiny potatoes with evening meal and everything was brought to table you couldnt even pour your own milk on cereal or have jug of water, you had to ask. Hotel is also impossible to walk from and i mean impossible. there are no pavements from hotel and road is far too dangerous to walk on, we sort of felt trapped of an evening, and we are not elderly or infirm

Room Tip: there are no lifts but it is only 2 floors high. though it is like a maze inside. ask for ground flo...

We have just returned from the hotel, where we spent 3 nights. It was clean and tidy, very pleasant staff in all departments and good food. Well postioned for visiting Gloucester and the Cotwolds.

Room Tip: We were at the back of the hotel, I think in the rooms at the front, there might be traffic noise.

Hotel is situated in the middle of nowhere on a busy main road.
Public areas have been refurbished to a good standard.
Room was a typical Shearings hotel room in need of redecoration
Bathroom a mismatch of avocado and white, there was no shower or heated towel rail but it was
very clean and towels changed daily.
Food was very good with plenty of choice, chef worked wonders
on what was obviously a limited budget.
Staff very helpful and pleasant.
Hotel has a relaxed laid back atmosphere.
Some advice for Shearings coach tour passengers who are of a
certain age and perhaps not in the best of health. While the hotel
itself should not be a problem some of the trips out may not suit.
3 hours in Bath 3 hours in Cheltenham 2 hours in Worcester and
2 hours in Gloucester. A lot of walking about or sitting on park
benches waiting for time to pass involved.

Thank-you for your review, I wouldnt agree we are 'in the middle of nowhere' as the nearest town is less than 2.5 miles away but as you rightly say we are by a busy main road but because our bedrooms are at the rear of the building it doesnt really affect us inside the hotel or outside in the garden. As with any busy hotel the daily useage does take its toll on the decor but we are doing what we can, when we can during this recession to improve and update, hence the newly refurbished areas.
All but 3 of our rooms have showers and baths and should you have requested a shower hopefully we would have been able to provide you with one.
A lot of thought goes into our trips which are changed twice a year with the hope that we provide something for everyone so your comments will be passed on for any future tours.

This hotel is great if you are able bodied and capable of getting around. However if you like myself have a mobility problem it can cause problems - There is NO LIFT and SINGLE ROOMS are on the first floor. As I have problems with stairs and the holiday (5 day break with Shearings) involved a lot of walking, site seeing, shopping etc I found the holiday both tiring and painful. I think it would pay the hotel/Shearings to invest in a stair lift. That said, the hotel was clean and comfortable, staff very helpful and obliging, food excellent, entertaining very good indeed.
However the hotel is very isolated, so better suited to self-drive short breaks than short break coach tour holidays.

Room Tip: Apart from single rooms where views are not great, mine looked out onto a flat rooms, the rooms are...

Thank-you for your review, im sorry you had a problem with the stairs, when we are informed of a guest booking a single room but requesting a low floor we will always try to contact them prior to their visit to let them know there is one flight of stairs so that the guest themselves can decide what their capabilities are as everyone is different.
Despite this I was glad to see by your comments that you were happy with the other aspects of your holiday and had a good time.

First class service from the moment we arrived on Friday, for our two night break. great value for
money, pleasant and attentive staff all weekend.
I must add that the entertainment on Saturday evening by Ian Lockyer was perfect for everyone.
He is a brilliant musician and vocalist and certainly knows his audience, and in my opinion could appear at any venue in the country.
