“Very rude and unfriendly barman.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2015 NEW

We were a family of 4 visiting with 2 freinds for a meal. When ordering food at the bar the grey haired barman (not sure if he's the owner) was so unfriendly, rude and unnecaserily
confrontational. He refused to allow us to place separet orders for the same table, stating it would be too complicated for the kitchen! Everything he did was without a simple smile on his face, very solum and unfriendly, not what you'd expect from a barman!
The meals were ok, simple pub grub.
After finishing meals I left the pub to go back to the car to check on my dog, the same grey hair barman came chasing after us shouting "who's paying?" On reminding him we had already payed him when placing the order, he just turned and walked off, not a word of apology for his mistake.
Based on this experience we will never be returning or recommending to anyone.

“Lovely dog friendly pub”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2015

I visited the rising sun several times during a week in the Forest of Dean on holiday. It's a lovely pub, friendly staff and very welcoming to dogs. The outside area with duck pond is beautiful. I only had a sandwich and chips but it was good value and tasty. Hope to be back soon :-) x

“Unspectacular”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2015 via mobile

Dropping by during a walk to the nearby viewpoint from a couple of miles away, the food was real 'pub' but it may be all you can reasonably expect in the (relatively) middle of nowhere. Having run out of bread the only option was a really bog-standard dull and tasteless white bread roll. Not impressed.

We had a lovely meal here on Sunday lunchtime with our extended family while staying nearby. The food arrived quickly and was good and hot.

“Nice, dog friendly pub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2015

Have been to this pub quite a few times following long walks in the forest with our dogs. On all of the occasions that we've visited we have always had food (lunch only) which has been plentiful and warming (the sunday lunch was really good). The drinks (real ales) are really good and the pub is so welcoming to dogs which makes you totally relaxed. The locals are always friendly and the pub is so warm that you really don't want to leave. We have been to this pub with both friends and families alike and on all occasions were treated exactly the same. Would highly recommend to any walkers/cyclists/visitors all year round (as it is especially nice to sit outside in the summer). Hope it never changes. Well done!
