Having spent just one night in this B&B in September 2006 we thought that it was our right to report back to you with a warning...do not stay here!
And here is why...
My partner and I decided, after searching the internet to find somewhere to stat for one Saturday night, to celebrate our 1 year anniversary, the Lower Brook House would be a good option! After seeing their internet site which boasted five (yes, five!!) AA diamonds aware as well as 'snippets' from other well known newspapers boasting about the B&B that it would be a perfect place to stay!
(Though, do bare in mind that these reviews are dated, thus being that they have not had a good review in some time!!, not surprisingly!)
Not only did the B&B boast all of the above, but also on the internet site it states quite proudly that there is fresh fruit in the room, along with home made biscuits, and fluffy towels.
Though, in the harsh cold reality, yes ok, it had these things. sort of..we had 4 old apples, 2 cookies, and the towels were anything BUT fluffy!
So anyway..let me give you more of a break down/overview on our visit. Up on arriving, from the outside the premises look very inviting, a typical 'chocolate box' cottage with a running brook (hence the name, Lower Brook I guess!) right a the end of the front garden.
Having hauled our bag from our car, we continued up the stone cobbled path to the front door, which was open. Upon entering, we were greeted by whom we can presume was Anna (from the owners, Anna and Julian), though she did not introduce herself!
The entrance hall was nice, with a stone flooring (original?) and nice decor, to the right was a small lounge with an open fire, which was not burring (would of been nice to smell that!) the lounge housed two small brown leather sofas with large pillows. (Please try an ignore the children's toys in the corner of the room!)
We were then promptly led up to our room...now before I go on about the room, lets just state, the room we had was the 'Colebrook' suite, this was not our first choice, but upon booking this was the best they had which I think is 4 down from the 'top of the range' room. Still the room did cost us £130 for the night, so for this sort of money I would expect a nice room, not too posh but clean, pleasant with a nice comfortable bed.
However, upon entering the room, we found that it was cramped, with a four poster bed which barely fitted in into the room, there were dead flies on the floor, along with some live flies flying around. Now ok ok, I know what you are thinking, they can not help it if flies come in through the window, well no, agreed, but the dead ones? Hmm..
Anyway, Anna (?) left us to it..and left. Upon closer inspection we found that there was alot of dust in the room, over the surfaces, that some of the furniture was chip board covered over with a cloth and that it smelt damp.
Now, we get on the bathroom, oooh the excitement(!), we entered to find that the bah, of all things, was 'earthed' by an cable..hmmm, also that we had one small bar of soap and two posh(ish) looking shampoo's. Hardly what I would expect from a £130 room! Not only this, but in horror, the old wall paper was coming away from the walls, and it was dirty and dusty also!
Anyway, we left the room, trying to smile, and went for a walk, looking forward to our evening meal that we had booked at £25 for a three course meal, including coffee and chocolates.
Having read some good reviews on the food, at 19:30 we wondered down for food. The food, was sadly, as per the rest of the experience, very average. They have tried so hard to bring the reputation they used to have whilst having a good chef from the Savoy working there in the early days, but have failed miserably. Not enjoyable at all. When you are trying to create nice looking meals, you also have to have the food quality/quantity to match it.
Also, the dining room was very small and compact, so there really was no privacy, and people felt like they had to be quite, in a library style..
Anyway, we ate it, and went back to our 'delightful' room for an awful nights sleep on what can only be described as an AWFUL mattress...
So, we wake up and wonder down for breakfast, hoping that it would be some what better than dinner the previous eveing..and it was..yes, a positive, it was actually ok..we both at the Cotswolds breakfast (basically a fully cooked breakfast)...
Guests are not allowed to check in until 4pm,. and must check out for 10:30am...a but late and a bit early for a Sunday? You decide...
Stay away..be warned..you will regret it..
