“WOW . What a fantastic day”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

We went to the royal gunpowder mills not knowing quite what to expect but we all had a brilliant time . From the first moment we arrived the staff were so helpful and friendly and continued throughout the day . We made rockets and we launched them of which my husband had just as much fun as the kids. You must go on the land train what a brilliant idea . The compere had so much knowledge and passion that you get drawn into the history of the mills . Interactive areas for kids are really good and also the science lab was so funny . The cafe is affordable but if a lovely day a picnic in the lovely grounds is worth doing . As a family that didn't know what to expect we had a great time and we will be returning next year.

“Strictly not one for the grown ups”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

My wife and I visited the Royal Gunpowder Mills recently with my 24 year old daughter on a recent visit to her. We thought we'd have a 'family' day out and spend some quality time together. After reading the very positive reviews on tripadvisor we though we'd give this a go. I've got to say that it was like walking around a derelict army camp with derelict buildings everywhere. There is a formal and well stocked museum adjacent to the ticket office, but the staff/volunteers were more interested in talking to themselves than explaining the exhibits to those visiting - not good. There is a tractor train that runs around the grounds and the receptionist said that this wasn't due to run until 3:00 p.m. and that if it did there would be an announcement. Well it did, and there was no announcement. Whilst it was pleasant enough strolling around in the sunshine, for adults it was a bit of an expensive let down. If you've small children (I'd suggest 5-11 years) there is plenty to keep them amused and entertained with crossbows, water cannons, rifle and shotgun (air rifles) target ranges all well supervised. There is a cafe on site which is reasonably priced. For adults, a nice municipal park would have done just as well.

“Fantastic day out for kids and adults”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013

Just returned from day trip to the mills and had a fantastic time.
Loads of activities to do from rocket making, t-shirt printing, watching experiments in the lab to riding a land train around the site. Loads of information about the history of the site with interactive areas for kids.
Great value for money and affordable cafe as well. The weather wasn't great but as there was a mix of indoor and outdoor activities it worked really well. Could have spent much longer outside if weather was better as there are nature walks and a huge site to explore plus an adventure playground for kids.
Very well organised and thought out. The staff were very helpful and enthusiastic to impart their knowledge making the whole experience much more interesting. I will definitely be visiting again

“Cracking day out with the kids”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013 via mobile

This is my first visit to the gun powder mills and won't be my last. On arrival was shown into the rocket making area, my 8 and 3 year old had get fun making a rocket, to then be told that we were firing them in 45 mins. We came back and got our rockets and then went over to the field and fired them. The kids then went to professor nitrates lab which was funny and informative. There are lots of hands on things for the kids to do and staff are very friendly. I wouldn't recommend this place for adults only, but anyone with a small family up to the age 14 will have a great time. The cafe is basic but food is good value for money. I will come again with the kids as they have been speaking about it for the last two days. Check the Internet to find out what is going on before you attend. Keep up the great work and see you soon.
