“Very Nice but at a high Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Very good ambiance, very good food, very good service, if not slightly over priced which was a shame but well worth a visit, but do book.

“Lovely Sunday / Birthday Lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

Like the previous reviewer, I was very surprised by the reviews for The Bear recently. We eat there regularly, with family, children, as a couple etc. Invariably, the waiting staff are welcoming and friendly. They dont stop and chat for ages as they are usually very busy, but they are polite, friendly and unobtrusive. We have never had a bad meal at The Bear and have eaten there for lunch and dinner countless times. In fact we went yesterday for a special Sunday lunch and had very nice local game terrine, and roast beef. No room for pudding! My daughter had the Bear Burger, which was modified very happily to her taste! We thoroughly enjoyed our meal as usual. We do come from the village, so we could be a little protective of our local businesses, but there are lots of great food options in the village and this one really does hold its own. I would whole heartedly recomment this pub / restaurant every day of the week.

“Excellent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

Don`t usually write reviews but after reading the latest reviews for The Bear felt that they deserved better. My husband and I paid our second visit onThursday evening and once again thought the food was excellant. On both occasions (the other was a lunchtime) we were greeted by a smiley friendly waitress. The restaurent was not busy, although there was a large party in the function room, but the atmosphere was still warm and friendly. No the food is not cheap but as with everything in this life you get what you pay for! Our meals were delicious , well presented and good size portions. In fact we opted for two starters as they were quite substantial. The Haddock Brandade was delicious and something a little different. It was on the starter specials menu but it made an adequate main course for us. The one negative is that the parking can be difficult but the Bear does have it`s own parking areas although small. We are not local (we live in Benfleet) but will definately visit again and certainly recommend The Bear.

“Very Poor”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

A complete let down, after visiting with family for Sunday Lunch. The food was awful, cold, limp veg and rock hard potatoes. Attitude from extremely rude and miserable staff, the waitress was so cold and miserable it spoilt the atmosphere. The Beef that I had requested medium came out over well done along with a pathetic amount of vegetables. After speaking with the Manager he kindly didnt charge us and tried to rectify with a slice of medium beef that was cooked perfectly. We were not looking for a free meal, just a really nice Sunday lunch!. Have to say this place has gone down hill massively. We are from the local Village, there are much better options out there.

“Terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

Three off us had Sunday lunch: tasteless roast beef dinner and bland turkey. The 'jus' for the beef was like water, and the meal was only warm. The burger, when we last dined there was good, but it was tasteless today. They served coffee promptly, which is possibly why they forgot the puds - which were luke warm, just like the service. I suppose one could say in a way the service was 'snooty' - who knows why! The Manager made recompense and offered everything to make things right.
