“nice stay, clean and comfortable.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2012

Stayed one night on business. Very satisfied and would recommend. Clean, comfortable and quiet. Felt very safe as a woman traveling alone. Staff helpful and friendly without being over friendly. Good value for money compared with the local Travelodge where I have also stayed. Furniture and fittings are not all brand new, but are clearly well maintained, eg none of the mouldy showers that you sometimes get in other hotels.

This is a great family run Hotel. I stayed one night because i had a job interval the next day. The room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was very good.

The price compared very favorably to other hotels i have stayed in in Chelmsford and i would recommend it to any one. This is the first time i have seen a 'Teas-maid' i believe they are called; it was great.

I have stayed here on and off for periods of up to 8 months as the work in Essex demanded. After day one in 2006, I didn't bother looking for something cheaper as the quality of the rooms, food and surrounding suited me fine.
I stay away from home quite a lot and really don't like the impersonal surroundings and copious "add-ons" of the big chains.
This small family run hotel is close to the town centre, provides easy access to the rail network, (London ½ hour), and is a must for anyone wishing to go to the Olympics.
Ignore the 2 Stars, it's worth at least 4 in my book.

The Boswell House Hotel is a small, unpretentious hotel, and it proved to be an excellent choice for our stay in Chelmsford. The owners were especially helpful and interesting, and even assisted with some of the historical research we were doing in the area. And they very kindly and very promptly sent a jacket I had left behind to the next destination on our journey. The room was basic but large, filled with a lot of light, and well-equipped with a comfortable bed, tea kettle, etc. The bathroom was quite large and very clean. It would have been helpful to have had a few extra towels, but that is a minor issue. Free wi-fi was available in the room, and a suitable breakfast was included daily. On one of the nights, there was a bit of noise from the street, but that is to be expected in a town the size of Chelmsford. Overall, this is a very good hotel, and my only reason for giving a rating of 4 rather than 5 is that it is a bit simple in the amenities provided. We would stay again!

My friend and I stayed here for 5 nights and had a most enjoyable stay. Highly recommended and would certainly stay again. The couple who own and run Boswell House made us feel very welcome and at home. The meals are excellent home style cooking with a change of menu each night. A full English breakfast is also available and good. Built in the 1800s it is very clean and comfortable. Our room was spacious, had WiFi, hairdryer, digital TV, tea & coffee facilities as well as wardrobe and chest of drawers. Located within a comfortable walking distance to the railway and bus stations, shopping centre and Essex Records Office. Train to London Liverpool Street takes 35mins. Stansted Airport is about 45mins bus trip.

Have now stayed several times and it offers a very good option for a town with a shortage of good places to stay. Very much a family business and you deal only with the couple who owns it. Reliable standards, free Internet and parking, but no frills. Had to insist on being allocated a single room rather than a more expensive one. Map display is inaccurate. The hotel is at the junction of Victoria Road and Springfield Road, 10 mins walk from the town centre.
