“A Lovely Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

We stayed here over night to visit family the next day. Checking in was quickly and efficiently. After seeing our room we returned back down stairs to the restaurant and enjoyed a very nice meal.
Every member of staff was very helpful, polite and friendly. Our room was very clean and comfortable. Excellent value for money.

Really enjoyed a couple of night stay here back in February. the hotel has great character the staff are very friendly and the restaurant has a good menu and good value for money grub, book a meal early as they seem to get booked up quick especially at weekends. You are right in the town centre which for us was great and with ample parking.

Room Tip: Dont know as we had a room with no view but we were happy to be there anyway

Thank you for your kind comments and we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. It is certainly recommended to book a table for the restaurant in advance as we are very busy most weekends.

Didn't stay in the hotel but ate in the restaurant. Yes, the decor could do with a bit of fresh paint and the restaurant area did look a little tired but the waiting staff were really friendly and efficient, especially what appeared to be the blonde lady in charge. The young man also behind the bar was totally efficient in serving our drinks and even escorted us to our table. The waitress who took our order could confidently answer all our questions on the food being served. My friend did find a very small dead centipede looking bug in her salad starter but this was immediately dealt with by the lady in charge and we weren't made to feel like we were being a painful customer. I was most impressed. My sirloin steak was delicious and tender and cooked just to my liking. The only thing I would like to say is that the table could have done with a good wipe as my sleeves of my top kept getting stuck to the table, other than that I would have no hesitation in returning.

Stayed here just for one night while attending a course at the Warner Textile Museum in Braintree. Perfect location for any one else doing the same. Really friendly Manager and bar staff. There were lots of people eating in the bar when we arrived and we chose to do so too. Good food at reasonable cost served by cheerful waiter who recommended the steaks - cooked to perfection. The rooms are dated but spotlessly clean. The beds were comfortable and the tea/ coffee tray offered a good selection of tea, coffee and biscuits - with nothing missing. The breakfast was fabulous with excellent choice and again served with a smile. For value for money I would give it 10 out of 10 and would stay there again without hesitation.

Stayed in this hotel for one night in April, was going to see our local football team play at Braintree. Hotel has lots of character, though as said in past reviews could do with a lick of paint, some new Curtains and Nets without holes in.. Nothing too major or the hotel would lose its character. We stayed in the Cresswell Suite and we had all the home comforts, Tea and Coffee facilities.. Overall very good stay. Breakfast was excellent.. All staff were very friendly and helpful.... Would definitely stay here again if we was ever in the area. We paid £50 for the night, this included breakfast. Very satisfied with the service and value for money.....

Thank you for your kind comments regarding your recent stay at the White Hart. The hotel is due for a major refurbishment later in the year and we do hope to retain the character of the hotel. We are glad that you enjoyed your visit, despite the adverse football result!" - Yes this is the one.

Stayed 9th-12th April. We always stay at the White Hart when we visit family who live locally.
Hotel in general:
Great atmosphere. The building is old so had some wonderful traditional characteristic features. Wood panelling, creaky floors etc. In the bar area there are log fires so its nice and cosy when its cold outside. Everywhere you go in the hotel it is spotlessly clean. The bar area also has large comfy soft leather sofas to relax in and once sat on them you don't want to move! (Don't know if that's a good or bad thing lol!)
Staff:
Cannot fault the staff in any way. They are all friendly and polite and are very hardworking. We were greeted every morning by the maids, management and waitressing staff when we went to breakfast.
In the past few years we have stayed here we have never come across any staff being rude (as mentioned in a previous comment).
The staff are also great with the kids so I recommend this hotel if you are travelling as a family.
Food:
Food is fantastic! Vast choice for breakfast, from cereals, fruit, pastries to a choice of the hot menu. The choice is yours and it certainly sets you up for the day!
Had a meal with the family in the restaurant area on Tuesday night. As previous visits we cannot fault the service or the food. We were served by Steve (I think), and a lovely waitress/bar staff ( with dark hair, sorry didnt get your name). Thankyou both for your great service! Food prices are on a par with equivalent hotel chains and are very reasonable. (Not expensive as somebody commented previously).
Rooms:
We had a family room on the top floor (room 19). Spotlessly clean (thank you Elaine). Spacious, plenty of room for our family of two adults, teenager and a toddler! The room was also very quiet and we didn't hear any noise from other guests (apart from the guest next door who decided to let their door slam twice at 10.30pm ish on Thursday night which caused my daughters to wake up! And they did it again at 7.15 on Friday morning). (That's the only niggle I've got).
Overall a fab hotel.
Just to go over a few points on previous comments I've read recently. The hotel is very popular so is very busy. As well as being a hotel, the bar is open to the public for drinks and meals all day, it is also used for functions (there was a wedding party there on Thursday). So yes there might be a bit of wallpaper coming off or a bit of wood needs repainting etc but it is busy and actually some of these little minor flaws add to the character of the hotel. We had a creaky chair in the restaurant, but we laughed about it and said it matched the creaky floor! didnt complain about it. If you are looking for a contempory hotel that looks brand new and will have no flaws then this is not for you. If you want, character, service with a smile in a great location, whether you are a family, travelling on business or a romantic break then this hotel is for you.
Thank you White Hart for another great stay. We will see you next year! If we can fit another break in we may see you before..

We had a short interval between visits in Braintree and needed to find a place for lunch. Luckily we chose the Whatever Hart. Past the wedding guests we found a table in the bar and looked at the menu. We did not want a feast so chose from the two main dishes for £9.95. We ordered quickly at the bar and got our drinks. I was not expecting much for the price and so was bowled over by the quality of the ham on our cold plates. Service was quick and polite. The bar was busy and there was the wedding party to see to. Overall a great simple meal at a super price, well and politely served.
