“Lovely lamb shanks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013 via mobile

Great dinner. Wonderful lamb. Rest of party had chicken wrapped in Parma ham with rich sauce. Lamb was spectacular along with green veg.

“Good food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

Food was good and clearly a lot of regulars go here.

What I did not like was seeing young children sitting at the bar (albeit they were the landlady's) but it was after 8pm and furthermore, considering this is a place serving food, I was not keen (again I appreciate we had finished our food) dogs running loose.

“walkers lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

This is a popular pub and we have eaten there a a group of walkers every year when we do this walk. There is an adjacent public car park so always plenty of room to park and the food is resonably good.

“Unpretentious, good food and beer - great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

This part of East Sussex does not boast that many great places to eat - though there are several ludicrously over-priced 'gastro pubs' - we know this because we live there!
We visited the Bear with friends after visiting the nearby Rudyard Kipling's house, from which it is only a 5 minute drive. We all ate from the carvery - often an unrewarding experience in some places - but not so here - decent lean, moist and freshly carved meat, plus roast potatoes to die for! Also terrific value - we all ate for pretty much the cost of a pricey round of drinks in one our local 'posh' Sussex pubs. We were inside, and while the decor is nothing to write home about - it doesn't pretend to be so. On a sunnier day, it would certainly be worth sitting outside and admiring the great views across the Weald.
We will certainly return if driving down that way again.
