“time for a re-appraisal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2011

Visited this sea side hotel for Saturday lunch. We were lucky to get a table as we hadn't booked. The Oceana restaurant overlooks Cooden beach and is bright and airy.Saturday lunch is £13.99 and £16.99 for two and three courses respectively.
The service was attentive without being overbearing. The food was of very good standard, and the portions were generous, with plenty of choice.

We had crayfish and avocado salad and a mixed fruit medley(melon, grapes strawberries etc) for starters, and grilled whole plaice and butterflied trout for the main course.
Each dish was thoroughly enjoyed by our party of three, and we will be going back.

“What a shame about the food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2009

We read the reviews and had seen the adverts and all appeared promising. With a possible overnight stay in mind and as we do not live to far away we decided to make a preliminary visit and to give the restaurant a try before a stay over. By south coast standards, the hotel location is a nice change. Genuinely a beach position but not completly and the hotel is a lovely example of 1928 english beach front architecture. For vistors to the hotel, car parking at the rear was not too bad on a quiet Friday night. Not so sure it would be adequate on a very busy day. Limited parking at the front, but nonetheless don't be put off. The hotel interior and reception is pleasant and has nice feel of history without the dusty chintzy worn out furnishings that are often characterise in british hotels and pubs. Nice reception from the bar man who served up a cold but somewhat flat pint of Kronenberg 1664, the memshahib said her gin and tonic was fine. We were presented with the Oceana restaurant menu the fayre of which is described as "traditional English " plus a wine list which offered a good choice of affordable wines. At this stage I had not realised the price (£20) of the set menu which I feel sure would have aroused my suspicions. The menu was terribly predictable and boring even by English seaside standards, no mention of the available famous fresh fish from the nearby Hastings or even the British most favourite meal a curry! I had the feeling that this was catering company menu straight to be delivered straight from the microwave. We therefore played safe and ordered a starter of 'seafood salad with avocado' and sirloin steak to follow. The avocado was unfortunately brown around the edges, the seafood was OK but too chilled, nonetheless we eat most of it except for the avocado. The steak was served with chips, mushrooms and tomato plus some very watery tasteless vegetables probably from the freezer - why no fresh vegetables with it them all being in season? We eat the steak which was good and some of the vegetables. Cheese and biscuits to follow for me (which was very good) and a very sweet cheesecake for the Mrs followed by good reasonably priced pot of coffee. The waiting staff were also very nice. In absence of quality restaurant in Bexhill, the potential for the Cooden Beach Oceana Restaurant is enormous only to be let down by food you can buy at a supermarket and cook better at home. I would suggest, charge a few pounds extra and give the chefs a chance to perform so that we the customer have a special meal out and one to look forward to. After all of that, we might just go back and try the Sunday carvery !
