“Don't be put off!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

So, I read the recent reviews on this hotel after I'd booked it but decided to go with an open mind. I'm glad I did because it was absolutely fine. The reception is accessed from the car park and if I was being really critical, this area is a little bit tired but you don't stay in reception, do you?! We were early but the room was ready. The manager was very helpful, offered assistance with luggage, spoke to my kids etc etc. Our room was light and airy, spotlessly clean, comfy beds, fluffy towels and nice ensuite shower/wc. Our room overlooked the High Street so we were not bothered by the extractor fan that others talk about. I called reception for an extra pillow and one arrived in less than 5 minutes. We ate in the Italian next door in the evening, it was very good value with very generous portions! Breakfast was good and I didn't have to pay for the kids to eat
which was great.
This is an old Georgian Hotel so it is creaky and uneven and there is no lift. At this time of year it is hot, where isn't! There is nothing wrong with the curtains they are lined but the windows are big and its light early in summer, we put a blanket over the curtain, that did the trick.
Dont go expecting The Ritz but for the money it's great and it's location in Battle could not be better.

Room Tip: It would seem that rooms that face the front don't hear the extractor fan from the restaurant.

I booked two rooms here for a business stay in January '13.

Upon reaching the hotel, we discovered it had good parking out the back, which was handy as on street parking is poor. The hotel is centrally located in Battle, on the High Street, so has easy access to local pubs, restaurants and attractions.

The hotel, as noted in other reviews could do with a pretty hefty makeover really. Rooms are basic, and a little rough around the edges. It's not a million miles off, and mostly decor related which can easily be sorted. If the character could be retained, it would be a great hotel.

My room was freezing even after the radiator being on constantly, the radiator was undersized.

We had breakfast each morning which was tasty and to order, but the same guy seemed to be running the hotel and cooking.

I don't like picking holes in hotels, but this was hard to ignore. If the owners take notice of reviews I would recommend a few simple things:

- Snag list on decor of each room
- Correct heating of each room
- Updated bathroom appliances, not just floors and tiles.

Overall, I would say its got great potential and is ideally located, but for now, I'd give this one a miss personally.

The George was once probably a fine old inn. In any event it has certainly seen better days. It is basic. However, the rooms are OK, the beds are comfortable and clean. The bathroom was clean and worked. The rooms are on three floors and there is no lift. A real effort was made with breakfast which was great. Unmanned reception and no one answered calls from room phone.
Entry to the hotel (no entry from the High Street) was disgraceful and unwelcoming..

Room Tip: OK for one night if you have to

Disgusting smell in room , noisy , broken toilet seat , window would not stay open , breakfast was not edible made me feel sick eating in a dirty room . Reception reminded me of a youth hostel I stayed in in Greece , but then I paid £2.50 not £80 , could not wait to get out of there .

We stayed here for one night in June and had a lovely stay, Hotel is lovely and clean we had an attic room which was small but had everything we needed, with a lovely view out the window looking at the Abbey. I have to recommend the Italian restaurant which is attached to the hotel it was excellent, food was wonderful.
Hotel location is great close to everything with a reasonable size car park, breakfast was lovely for a fiver and the 2 guys serving coped very well as it was busy.

We got stranded in battle, after wanting to purchase a car, and went to the hotel to enquire about a room to find there was no staff there! So we called the number on the business card requesting a double room and were quoted £40, later that evening we went back to rent the room and the desk clerk told us £65! After arguing we got a small room for £50, the floors are tilted, the bathroom dated, the mattress tilted and extremely soft, and the curtains thin letting in a lot of daylight in the morning resulting in a bad sleep, people walking in the hallway making the floors creek also kept us awake.

I booked in to the George Hotel in Battle for a couple of nights while working in the Hastings area. The staff made me feel welcome. The room on the 1st floor was a good size, clean, quite & comfortable, but lacked a chair even though the room was large enough for one. For anyone having lots of electrical items, there were 5no double sockets. The internet connection & mobile phone connections were good. The bathroom was large & the water temperature & pressure was good. The only thing that needed improving was a new wash basin, as the present one is badly cracked. There was also a leak from the joints on the radiator in the bathroom & the WC seat was very loose. Good breakfast & they start serving from 7am which is ideal as far as I am concerned. Sufficient car parking spaces to the rear of the hotel. For anyone who has the time, then the castle & museum are worth a visit. Plenty of places to eat & drink with an Italian & Thailand restaurant being only feet away. It is only a short 10 or 12 minute drive to the sea front in Hastings.

Room Tip: An associate staying at the same time said that the attic room he had was cramped in the bath/shower...
