Description: The White Hart is a privately owned family run free house and restaurant offering good quality wines, ales and spirits combined with a menu, of locally sourced and selected food. The menu consists predominantly of traditional home cooked food with a specials board offering further choices that may be in season. The menu is designed to suit all tastes and budgets. The White Hart welcomes children. Dogs are welcome in the public bar area and garden. The pub is a popular venue for walkers enjoying the surrounding countryside and the excellent network of footpaths.Records have been found dating back to 1760 showing a Public House on this site, the original pub occupied the front bar area and the small section around the bar with an outhouse. Today the pub has been extended to include the restaurant and summer room. The extensive views from the restaurant, summer room and patio are some of the most beautiful in Sussex, and give a large sweeping panorama of the Vale of Ashburnham immortalised by the painter William Turner (1775 – 1851) in his painting of the same name in 1816, a watercolour painted in the romanticist style. The painting was commissioned as part of a series by local eccentric MP John (“Mad Jack”) Fuller. Fullers’ intention was for Turner to paint a record of the county. Although 13 paintings were commissioned, only 6 were published in Part 1 – “Views of Sussex” 1820. Today the painting hangs in the British Museum London. The gardens and local area are a haven for wildlife and frequent visitors include robins, wrens, blackbirds, barn owls, tawny owls, finches, numerous butterflies and our most popular visitors, roe deer. Slowly the gardens are becoming established with many unusual plant specimens being grown including a large specimen of the Australian Tree fern Dicksonia Antarctica, and the giant Echium piniana from the Canary islands (if you would like seeds or a cutting of a particular plant in the garden then please ask and we will try and accommodate requests where possible). The gardens also contain children’s play area {including climbing frames also swings, a slide some monkey bars and more} and BBQ area which is popular on summer evenings. The premises, restaurant or summer room are available for private functions and are popular for birthdays and other family celebrations and corporate events. Throughout the year we have numerous events including a vintage car rally, classic bike rally and themed evenings often including a meal and entertainment e.g. St Patricks’ day and Chinese New Year – it is advisable to book a table as these events prove extremely popular. For details of forthcoming events or to book a table, please ask a member of staff,or look on our websiteWithin the garden, is a self contained modern two bedroom bungalow with its own fenced garden and patio area, The bungalow sleeps up to four people and is available for holiday let, pets are welcome. For further information please ask to speak to Sean.Sean and staff offer you a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your visit

“Overnight stop”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

The owner welcomes motorhome stop-overs. Meals normally served 7 days from May. Large car park, and fairly quiet. We had a hearty full english breakfast for a modest £13.90 for two, Great views from a high location near Battle. Recommended.

“Brilliant Place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

While on a short weekend break in the area we stumbled across the White Hart by accident. Best map reading error the wife has ever made. As soon as you walk in you are made to feel so welcome, 'like a local, they just haven't served yet'. The food was top quality and the beer was divine (someone definitely knows how to keep good beer). An excellent family pub/restaurant and the value for money has to be experienced to be believed! If I could rate them 6 I would. Next time we go won't be by accident. We can't wait.

“Fantastic Irish Night'..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

Stayed overnight in the pub car park with our campervan. The pub is listed in Britt Stops and,Motorhome Stopover.Amazing panoramic views of,Vale Of Ashburnham.
Sean and,Oisin had organised an,Irish night with full irish menu,Irish band,Irish dancing and,a guest playing the Harp.We were also invited into the other bar with a nice little log fire and,the final of,The 6 Nations Rugby to watch in comfort.
Food was excellent and,at,very reasonable prices. Great atmosphere, friendly people and,we were told that there would be a cooked breakfast available if we wanted to go into the pub the following morning. How could we refuse?.Breakfast gets 10/10.
We look forward to going again next month for the sixties night'. Check the website and, would recommend The White Hart if you're in the area.
A refreshing mini break. Thanks Sean, see you soon. Jayne and,Jim.x
