We stayed at Crowhurst Park last weekend as a family get together, to spend time together and to loosely celebrate a couple of birthdays.
There were 10 of us (7 adults and 3 children) and we had 3 lodges: a Minisota, Ontario & Colorado. The Colorado was very superior and very lovely. Unfortunately it was not my lodge!
We enjoyed the swimming pool area and for the adults the Steam and Sauna. The 2 older children were old enough for the Jacuzzi. The staff in the leisure area were very friendly and pleasant.
We were not planning to self cater main meals but were forced to on the Saturday night. We wanted an evening meal at around 5.30pm at the Manor House and the website indicated the menu plus opening times (plus the info in our lodges), but due to a wedding they could not guarantee what time our food would arrive as the wedding meal would take priority due to timings so it was possible that we would not get our meals till just before 7pm. This was a big disappointment and very unhelpful and not practical as one of our party was 4 years old and unfair to make him wait that long when it would have been virtually his bedtime. We ended up cooking ourselves as any restaurants in Battle could not either cater for the 10 of us or provide children or vegetarian meals (5 of our party were vegetarian and 3 of those children). I personally was not impressed with the oven in our lodge. It certainly didn’t heat up to the temperature it was supposed to so I was actually pretty cross. In hindsight maybe we should have booked ahead then we would have known and could have arranged a booking elsewhere.
We were able to eat at the Manor house for Sunday lunch. This was not bad. Not much choice for the veggies in our group – and especially the veggie children. Seems like the menu they advertise in the rooms and on the website is much slimmer on a Sunday but it is not clear until you see what is on offer on the Sunday menu. The lady who was serving us (long hair) was very polite and friendly especially with the children.
To sum up, we had an enjoyable stay mainly as the lodge was satisfactory and the swimming pool really was the highlight for us. The fireworks from the wedding were really lovely so did take away the bitter taste from our Saturday night disappointment.
I feel that if Crowhurst Park is going to cater for weddings then they need to build an additional restaurant/function room which also has a kitchen, so the ‘normal’ paying guests are not inconvenienced at all. The facilities are listed and advertised but they don’t state that it does not apply if there is a wedding! The Manor House can cope with one or the other but not both.
