“Improvements on the way!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

We arrived on a Thursday afternoon to be greeted by Mark and his new member of staff, a young and enthusiastic addition to the Kings Head team.
We were booked into Room 1, a fairly spacious room with old furniture but a new bed with spotlessly clean sheets and cover.
The building is old and therefore can give the feeling of being dirtier than it really is. However a lack of cleaning staff over the past few weeks has not helped and the bedroom did need more attention to cleanliness around the sink and shower areas.
Mark is a very enthusiastic manager and has obviously tried his hardest to develop business through the hotel, for example by bringing Italian food to Southwold where there is no other current provider.
The breakfasts are very good and provide a wide choice, although we did not have the opportunity of eating in the evening.
On talking with Mark he informed me that in the next few weeks carpets and curtains will be replaced and the rooms will be re-decorated, along with extras such as table lamps, door hooks and presumably toilet brushes!
With new staff in place to presumably ensure the rooms are cleaned to the highest standard and the new decor, the plus points of the food, location and enthusiasm of the management will improve the future reports on Trip Advisor.
We wish Mark well in the future and we look forward to our next visit to The Kings Head.

Our first weekend away since our son was born, nearly 2 years ago. Southwold our first choice as been many times before but usually stay in the Premier Inn at Lowestoft. We arrived on the Fri afternoon and were shown to our room. As we were led upstairs the first thing we noticed was the colour of the carpet, it was filthy and the smell was horrible. Inside the room the bed was made up in white bed linen and looked nice and comfy. But the photos on the website are soooooo out of date and very misleading. The guy left us to settle in, so we opened the door to the bathroom. Not what we expected at all! Shower head had limescale on it and didn't work very well. The bath had mould round it as did the tiles on the wall. As for the toilet, well, it had some cleaner down it which didn't smell of anything, but the toilet brush was foul. It could have probably got up and walked! For what we paid for 2 nights they could go to Tescos and buy cleaning products and a new toilet brush and a towel rail and made it a bit better. Someone needs to check exactly what the cleaners are doing cos it's not a great deal at present. Also we were not told that a band was going to be playing Fri eve and our room was right over where they set up in the bar. Breakfast was good but poorly organised, we had to ask for a cup of tea and they ran out of orange juice! Needless to say we won't be going back to but I do hope the owners read trip advisor and change their cleaners!!

Southwold is let down by this dreadful hotel. Its grimey, overpriced and lacks the appropriate customer service skills to ensure a pleasant and welcoming experience, vital in this industry. Best avoided.

We stopped by for lunch on a busy Friday and wheras we would usually go to a good pub such as the Lord Nelson we thought we would try somewhere different. Should have taken the hint as there were few other people in the pub it might not be brilliant.

I ordered a pint of Adnams Broadside - bearing in mind Adnams owns the pub and the brewery is less than a mile away it should have been quite good.

I can honestly say I have never seen beer like it. I am NOT exagerating but it really did look like hot chocolate made with ditchwater. The barman was unphased and continued with my order for a glass of wine for my wife and when I pointed out that "it might just be me but does that look cloudy to you?" he poured another half from the same pump and concluded "might be" I nearly fell off my stool laughing so suggested I try a different beer.

We ordered food (sandwiches) which were very average with supermarket bread but way way overpriced.

For entertainment value they then proceeded to clean the beer pump pipes through shouting instructions to the cellar as they did so. As there were by now no other customers whatsoever and the staff who had been taking lunch at the bar had now finished I suppose there wasn't anything else to do.

DO NOT GO NEAR THIS PUB - the beer is awful, the food overpriced, the staff useless.

It could be Adnams use the pub as a training ground for how not to do it but there is no way I would ever return and will be very suspicious of other Adnams pubs in future if that is the standard they are satisfied with in their own home town!!

Room Tip: If the pub food is this bad how bad can the accommodation be? Go figure!

One should have had followed ones reservations from the outset. Last minute booking, a relatively reasonable rate for Southwold, what could possibly go awry? We were optimistic. It became apparent upon entering the room that even a nightly rate of £85.00 does not include basic housewifery skills. Filth on every surface. Clearly the management think that because of the location they can rest on their laurels and assume a consistent footfall through their establishment. Thank goodness for Trip Advisor. No longer can these charlatans get away with shoddy, get them in, get them out service.

We booked a room here as everywhere else in Southwold was full.As the rates were cheap for this area we were not expecting the Ritz , just a basic clean room to spend the night. On arrival we were met by a somewhat grumpy manager who showed us to the room. The carpet was so old parts were thread bare and had not been hoovered. The windows were like stained glass as so thick with dirt and cobwebs all over the ceiling. The bathroom was filthy, mouldy tiles, brown grime on shower head, previous guests toothpaste dribble and splash marks on the mirror and basin, and I wont even begin to describe the horrors on the loo brush! We decided to eat elsewhere, as could only imagine the state of the kitchen if this was what the rooms were like! I would not recommend staying at the Kings Head.

Room Tip: Pack rubber gloves, bleach and dusters.

I stayed at his hotel last week. I was surprised at how dirty the room was. I made a point of asking for it to be cleaned but it didn't get much better. Not only was the room dirty but the carpets on the stairs was filthy and the staff didn't seem to notice. It is in a handy location and could be ideal but needs to be cleaned. Not to be recommended
