“Lovely Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

We stayed here for a Thursford break and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff were exceedingly friendly and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and warm and we enjoyed the views over Sheringham Park. The selection of food at breakfast was exceedingly good as was standard of food served in the evenings with attentive, but not intrusive service by the waiting staff. The dining room with the log fires and the panelled rooms made this a very Christmassy, country house stay. We would certainly return. We did incidentally have afternoon tea here in the summer which was sumptuous.

It was Thursday night and there were no spare beds in 4 or 5 star hotels in North Norfolk that we could find anywhere and we'd searched a lot. Then one popped up at The Dales so we booked it with relief.

Broadly, we enjoyed it. The food was very good, the room was comfortable and reasonably furnished, the welcome by the staff, particularly the lead person, was excellent. We had a good night's stay.

So why only an 'Average' rating? Well, at its peak, this would have been a very very good country house hotel but it's getting tired and a bit frayed at the edges. We were there at the end of the summer season and you can tell by the state of items such as garden furniture, the outdoor facilities and also by the feeling in the public rooms. The lounge was a bit bare, lacking in the small touches that you expect at this price and the country house ambience is patchy. The bar is standard hotel, not a refuge and the range of drinks is narrow.

I don't say you won't enjoy it nor that it isn't value for money but it is not going to make me return. Be happy to go there again but I don't have it high on my to do list. Lovely grounds and surroundings, by the way. They are worth a lot.

We had a lovely relaxing 2-night stay at the Dales at the end of October. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was comfy, nicely furnished with a lovely view. We ate in the restaurant both evenings and the food was delicious and service excellent. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Having decided that we wanted a relaxing Christmas break away from all the normal seasonal chores, my wife and I booked a four night stay at The Dales. We certainly got lucky on this occasion, a late booking in November managed to secure one of the last remaining rooms which turned out to be very comfortable, although we would have liked it to be a bit bigger.

The hotel definitely has the country house feel with warm comfortable lounges with log fires(needed tending more often to ensure they stayed alight) snug bar and atmospheric dining room. The staff were extremely attentive, warm and friendly and when asked went to great lengths to accommodate any requests, thank you Rachel.

We thoroughly enjoyed the programme delivered by the hotel and found the food to be of a high standard and well presented. All in all an enjoyable Christmas break and good value.

Our only concern was with regard to the lift which was very old and very noisy, we did report our concerns to reception on arrival but we were assured that it would not be a problem and no previous complaints had been received. unfortunately our room was near the lift on the 2nd floor so noise was a problem until other residents retired.

Dining in the panelled dining room was most enjoyable but the uncertainty of whether you would be seated there or in an adjoining room with far less atmosphere was a concern. we resolved that issue by joining with four other guests to make a table of six, thus ensuring a regular place in the main dining room.

my sister and i decided that this year we would treat ourselves to christmas away - after a lot of research online we chose this hotel - and what a find! we had a lovely time. we arrived on 23rd dec and left on 27th - one really important point to start with is that our shower didn't work, to be more precise the bath tap diverter wouldn't move. even tho' this was Christmas Eve the hotel immediately sorted it out - the plumber said that someone had previously jammed it down too hard. things can go wrong anywhere but it is how a place deals with it which marks it out as good or not and the staff coudn't have dealt with this any faster or with any more concerned attention. apart from that there were so many little extras built in to the break; including a present from father xmas outside our bedroom door on xmas morning! there was a trip to the thursford spectacular - an event not to be missed; a fun bingo game which broke the ice between guests, a quiz plus a dinner and dance on the final night - all included in the price. beds were very comfortable and our room was fantastic - the hotel has retained its country house feel. we found everything to be very clean (and we are fussy!). the cooked breakfasts were a bit slow in coming but were very good and worth the wait - and anyway, we were on holiday! the food was superb and although i would agree with the previous reviewer that the menu was fairly short it covered most tastes and the food was beautifully cooked with very good ingredients. we would def recommend this hotel to our friends (actually we've already started doing this and may book a few of us in for next year!) - annie

We stayed at the Dales as a treat to ourselves, but ended up deeply regretting
our decision. On arrival we were greeted by a seemingly inexperienced young girl. She was helpful however and we had decided on a standard double room. When it came go payment, a more senior member of staff bustled over and asked if we wanted to upgrade to a superior room, mumbling about a better deal as we were late arrivals. The price was not clearly stated but we did not think it would be much more so we agreed. As soon as we did the lady quickly ran off to 'check the room was ready for you' (after walking into the room we soon saw this was code for 'I'll go and turn the heating on because that room never gets used but we don't want them to know that')
The room was very small and the bed was just two singles pushed together and secured with a short that was much too small so during the night I fell down the middle. The bathroom was shabby, the shower head was mouldy as well as the sealant. The side of the bath was practically rotting away. As I mentioned before the heating had only just been put on so it was very cold. There were cobwebs on the ceiling and our suspicions that the room was rarely used were confirmed when we realised that the biscuits on the welcome tray were out of date!
When we came to check out, we raised all of these issues and were met with apologies and a whopping 14 pound off the 170 pound bill! We were shocked but had had enough so just paid and left (not before writing an essay on the feedback form.) We were disappointed that the room was so poor, on the upside breakfast was good but we will not be returning as the hotel is certainly no worth what we were charged. 'I'll just go and make sure your room is ready'. Please, don't be so ridiculous.

I am surprised The Dales is rated a 4 star hotel, it seems to be more like a 3 star residence. We stayed for the days between Christmas and New Year, and although our confirmation letter mentioned a la carte dining, it was only available for our first night. After that, we had a very limited menu to choose from. The food was a bit disappointing, but quite good value. Every time my husband wanted a drink, he seemed to be very unlucky, the beer was not right, the lager was no better, and the coke for his Bacardi and coke was flat. We were led to believe there would be roaring fires, this was the case in reception, but the other three fires were always going out. Our room and bathroom were very nice, once they warmed up. The staff were all very friendly.
