“Okay but.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

We went for Sunday lunch (which is a set menu), most of the food was tasty, however, the fish course was bland, if fact it had no taste. I know that fine dining generally comes in small portions, but the portions we had were measly, If these were to be slightly increased, they may represent the price - you can't run a business by name alone.

Overall - Okay room for improvement.

My wife and I stayed at Morston Hall for one night as it was our wedding anniversary. We had a garden suite which was spacious and comfortable. Dinner was excellent - every course being delicious and accompanied by an equally delicious recommended wine. My congratulations to Richard, the head chef, and to the sommelier. I would do this much more often if I could afford it!

I was surprised by some of the reviews, especially the one that complained about afternoon tea, the staff, decor and gents loos. They said that they had been before and been disappointed, so why go again.....! I went yesterday for a cooking demonstration, and found everyone helpful, friendly and welcoming. My husband who went for a long walk whilst I was there, was advised by Mrs Galton,(Tracy) which walk to do (there was a high tide). We do live in Norfolk, but had never had the Morston experience. The demonstration was excellent, Galton is a lovely guy, and no question asked was unanswered. The food was excellent. The ladies loos were spotless, and full of nice hand and body lotion and lots of clean towels, and my husband reported that the gents loos were excellent too. I particularly like the way the two loos were signposted, the ladies had a handbag on the door, and the gents a hat. As for the comment about the decor, it was a lovely mixture of old and new, not eighties at all, strange some peoples ideas, the furniture etc suits the age of the house. The young staff were lovely too.

Morston Hall is a fabulous setting and the staff and service are always great. Dinner is a,ways a bit of a gamble due to the set menu, but that's part of the attraction for us as the quality of the food and variety of the menu is always great and therefore it's an opportunity to try food that you might not otherwise.

Last nights menu didnt disappoint and was up to Galton's usual high standards and, contrary to some of the other reviews on here, Galton was in the kitchen cooking - and made a point of coming to speak to us during the evening.

Top tip: choose the wine flight - the sommelier takes time to introduce a wine to complement each course.

This hotel really is all about the food - inventive, immaculately presented and with some sensational taste combinations (even if not cooked by Galton). The sommelier's wine selection sets the menus off beautifully. Excellent fresh local produce used. A great dining experience - note the set menu can be varied to accommodate personal tastes. First-class breakfast too. Superb scrambled eggs and homemade marmalade.

Great hotel location - close to the sea and set in small but pleasant grounds.

Rooms were well appointed and comfortable.

So why not 5 stars? I think that at the price (£350 per couple per night Bed, Breakfast and Dinner not including drinks) one would expect a more personal touch. I didn't meet any member of staff who appeared to be over the age of 25 at most. Does that matter? - they all did a good job - but at the prices being asked you might expect an experienced manager to be on hand to ensure smooth running and a little more depth of service. For the price the rooms could have a bit more to them - a desk at which to write for example.

Of course the stay here was great - a real treat - but if to put all the factors together as a hotel it falls a little short of exceptional, even if the food is.

We stayed for 3 nights and the culinary side was wonderful even if not cooked by Galton Blackiston himself. The set menu was adapted to suit a non meat eater and what I particularly liked was that where possible what was served closely matched the meat course, with the same vegetable accompaniments and minor changes e.g. a port reduction as a sauce rather than a meat jus with the vegetarian or fish alternative. It made for a really nice way of eating, in that the courses complimented each other and whilst we were eating different things it felt like we were eating a well rounded menu.
2 of the 3 nights we chose to follow the wine selection with the courses. All were an excellent match. We enjoyed our own choice on the other night - but it really was not such a good match. I’d recommend trying the sommelier suggestions .
The Celeriac course on the first night was the best I’d ever tasted. Some of the fish dishes were devine too. The Cheese Board is how it should be – room temperature for the cheese, and a great selection.
The hotel itself is well appointed, we had a great room and bathroom with plenty of room and good facilities.
What I thought was lacking was the personal touch. It may have been that the owners were not there during our stay. On our first night the room was not turned down for the night. Whilst on the one hand I’m not that bothered if that happens or not in general, the hotel makes a thing of saying that is when your fresh milk is brought. No turn down - no milk!
We had a couple of drinks in the room – very slow to take away empty glasses on a couple of occasions etc – not the 5 star service you would expect.
There appeared to be no one actually in charge or tasked with greeting guests – I’d expect without it being over the top that when you come in at the end of the day - someone may at least greet you with a hello asking if you had a good day, was everything ok etc. We did not particularly need anything – but may have been nice to have been asked.
Seating in the conservatory was nice, but we were moved inside on the second day (no reason given – perhaps you needed to ask?) and whilst the dining room is well appointed it was a bit dark, particularly at breakfast.
So overall a hotel that should be 5 star – I’ve given it for the food – but a bit more effort could be made on the welcoming customer side. As mentioned – whilst we were not told that the owners were not there in advance, it may have been as they were away the service was good but not quite as expected?
Overall however I would go back.

Hotel- Rooms were above average for this class of establishment. Comfortable finishings with antiquey funrniture ,nice decoration , creaky floors with slight bounce. Long strange shaped bathroom with no where to put your toilet bag but you could watch TV in the bath.

Staff- Were charming ,very professional and attentive without being in your face.

Food- Galton plays it very safe by having a set menu at a set time. Although a Michelin restaurant we found the food slightly underseasoned, unadventurous and slightly prosessional in its delivery. Some of his partnerships in a meal we feel missed or clashed to our taste buds.
Having eaten the day before at the Neptune Inn Old Hunstanton where we felt the chef here had shown flair and excitement in his menu.....it certainly tasted much better and showed why he had and was worth his one star Michelin
