We stayed over a Fri/Sat night period in Room 8 which appears in the hotel publicity. This is an attic room of generous proportion with a very impressive sized bathroom. The room was contemporary and well appointed.
We were disappointed with the bed which seemed to us to be only a double despite the hotel description of 'Large king size'. I think they must mean the room, not the bed.
For those of you who like a shower beware. The bathroom has a bath with a telephone handle type tap setup which has a hand held shower attachment. There is no provision for a 'proper' shower which was a great pity as the bathroom had plenty of room for both a bath and a shower. We were a bit put out when we found the the chained bath plug was too short by at least 2" to reach the plug hole. We were forced to remove it so that we could bathe.
We raised this with the propiertor who informed us that the intended use was to simply take a bath and use the shower attachment to rinse shampoo etc. Not ideal if you like a shower, so be warned.
The owner told us that this situation is due to be corrected when extension of the property takes place. We ate both days on the hotel patio and meals were reasonable in type and price. Its position is ideal for the georgian market town of Holt if you want to avoid driving whilst you enjoy the delights of the town. If we could be housed in a room with a shower we would have no hesitation in returning.

This gem of a hotel is an excellent place just to drop by and have lunch - the bar food is great and the beer is proper!

Holt isn't the obvious choice as your base for a North Norfolk break because it isn't on the sea, but it is very close to everywhere and is actually ideal as it has attractions in its own right.

The Lawns is the perfect choice not because it is very cosy, clean and bright and has great no nonsense food, proper beers and decent wines, but because (and this isn't the case everywhere in Norfolk, particularly in the trendy villages) the staff understand that each guest is an individual and fall over themselves to facilitate you having the best possible time on your terms - not theirs. This place is a brilliant find!

If you don't stay - eat there. You'll be glad that you did.
