“Fantastic grounds, relaxing, excellent service, clean room.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2011

We went for a romantic wkend, Superb hotel. Def recommend it. Staff so helpful and friendly.
Room spotless. Only down side was the bar menu was too expensive and it cost £7.50 for Malibu and Pineapple and half a beer. Breakfast was very good, with a good choice on the buffet. Dining rooms excellent and very clean.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2011

My partner and I stayed at this hotel in April 2011 for a romantic break whilst we were visiting friends and relatives. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, and even helped recommend places and attractions to visit whilst we were there.

The appearance of the hotel and the grounds are stunning - an ideal wedding venue. It has good facilities (children's adventure playground, gym, swimming pool and spa, lots of free parking etc), but there were a few details that made this hotel stay disappointingly average to what it could have been.

The rooms were very spacious. We had a standard room, but it was very large, with a spacious en-suite bathroom with twin sinks and a spa bath. Unfortunately, the bath looked grubby (especially around the shower screen area) and a couple of the spa jet covers were missing, the power settings for the spa jets didn't work and the bed was two single mattresses zipped together - with a huge crater between the two mattresses (a pet hate of mine!). Overall the room was spacious and perfectly adequate though.

There weren't many tv channels in the bedroom, and no information to tell you which channels were there, so it was a bit of trial and error. It would have been nice to have a few more than the standard tv channels though, especially if you're travelling with children, who inevitably need to be in bed earlier than you and need to be kept entertained!

The restaurant was a hit and miss affair. Dinners were fine, but we stayed on a DB&B package, and there was only a very limited number of menu items on the dinner menu that we could pick from on this package. The menu also wasn't changed daily, so we ended up eating the same thing night after night, but the food was nice and well cooked, and the staff friendly and attentive.

Breakfast on our first morning was disappointing. We arrived 40-45 mintues before the end of service, but there was barely any of the hot or cold selection left. We put this down to the fact that there seemed to be a lot of buisness travellers at the hotel who are usually up and at breakfast earlier, but nevertheless, at a published rate of £15 per head for breakfast, I found the lack of choice disappointing, and felt that I should not have to wait a futher 15 minutes for the food to be freshly cooked. If you're going to serve breakfast up until a certain time, the food should be there I think, especially given the fact we were at breakfast a good 40-45 minutes before the advertised end of service. I appreciate that things run out during a buffet style service, but the restaurant was busy, and there was not much replenishment going on!

We also decided to use the spa facilities whilst we were staying at the hotel, but it was only by sheer chance (a last-minute cancellation) that we were able to do this. Tip: if you want any spa treatments whilst at the hotel, I suggest you book them at least 3 months prior to your stay!! The attendant told me that they had bookings up until September in the spa! I don't know if this is because members of the public can join the gym and use the spa, but it was very disappointing not to be able to have the full pampering sessions that we were both looking forward to (we booked this particular hotel because it had a spa and pool etc).

So overall, I would say that this is a perfectly adequate hotel, but they really need to concentrate on sorting out the details, otherwise you may find yourself slightly disappointed.

Room Tip: Make sure you book any spa treatments in advance!

could not have asked for a better room, we and our friends stayed in rooms 5 and 7 both looking out onto the lovely grounds and gardens. swimming pool was the best we have had it was like walking into a bath lovely and hot, the young lad on the pool was ever so helpful and always smiled what a happy chappy. The manager was first class and made our 2 nights at Redworth Hall very special.

Room Tip: take a book to the pool

Have just returned from a short break at the Redworth Hall Hotel. The hotel itself is very nice, nice grounds, great childrens' play area, staff very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was adequate, plenty to choose from and the staff again were very helpful. The pool and facilities were good. The room (a family room on the top floor) was very spacious with a large double and one put-you-up single for our son. The complaint we have is that the room needed updating and a good clean. It was dusty, with cobwebs from the ceiling, bits on the carpet and dirty paintwork. The upholstery could all have done with a good hoover - it was covered in dust. The decor needed freshening up - wall paper was coming off in places, and it generally just needed redecorating and a jolly good clean. This let down what is a nice hotel. One other thing, we saw two different sets of people with dogs in the hotel which personally I don't agree with,

Lovely setting, very friendly staff, good leisure facilities. Overall great break BUT rooms adn corridors very hot. TV has only terrestrial (and sky sports) which by 9.30 at night wasn't enough for our 11year old. Durham worth a daytrip. Our family room was a suite and at 220 for B+B for 2 nihgts , there were three of us , we thouhgt it very good value.

We spent a three day break at the Redworth Hall Hotel, corresponding with a wedding anniversary. We booked a spa de luxe room for a little extra, in the new wing. Very comfortable and clean with modern furnishings, spa bathroom and shower, big comfortable bed, flat screen tv - only comment would be it was quite dark in the day time, with one small window, so the lights needed to be on most times. Quiet during the night but the doors made the usual hotel 'bang' when not closed carefully !
We had breakfast and dinner included - breakfast was very adequate (not quite to Hilton's standard) and plenty available. Dinners were excellent, 3 courses, with a good choice on the wine list (not too expensive for hotels).
Took a little while to get the lay out of the hotel, the new wing adjoining the old hall - which is a lovely old building, set in very relaxing grounds - also a well designed childrens play area on site, spendid swimming pool, well equipped gym.
All the staff were excellent, very very helpful and attentive. We took the park and ride at Durham and visited the city - lovely cathedral and castle and river walks, and the hotel is also aobut 20 minutes from Hamsterley Forest for miles of woodland walks. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Room Tip: We were told the standard rooms were very nice to.

The hotel looks so impressive from outside. But our overall experience was very mixed.

Having checked into our bedrooms we had a long and quite confusing walk to find our rooms. The superior twin rooms we had paid a premium for were tucked away just before a grubby staff corridor. They were good quality and had great jacuzzi baths and nice robes but the view was of a brick wall and there were only towels for one person. When we called reception for we were asked "well have you looked in the wardrobe?" err..no, but why would they not just put extra towels out when two people are staying.

We went to the spa. I asked if my mother, who has severe arthritis and walks with the aid of a stick could access the pool bar area via the bar which would save her walking up a flight of stairs and wet floor through the changing rooms. The answer was "no".

We ordered food which was left uncleared for ages afterwards.

I asked about connecting to wifi - and was told this would cost £15 per hour.

we went to the bar. This is like a sports bar in a modern pub. The tables were mainly cluttered with half finished meals and the whole place smelt of chips. we had two small glasses of wine which were warm and at £9.40, very over-priced.

Dinner in the restaurant was again hit and miss. Generally the food was good but some of it came cold or badly presented. Several times we asked for things which just never came.

Breakfast the next morning was pure chaos - no one in control - some staff standing about while others ran around trying to replenish the buffet. A huge queue at the hot counter with one person serving.

And then to top it all, £50 was added to my bill by mistake. It was corrected, but I had to spot the mistake. As I was discussing the bill, one of the staff was lounging over the counter discussing a possible hen holiday. The staff are lovely and informal, but in a 4* hotel you do expect a level of professionalism that too often just wasn't there.

So in summary its an impressive building and the great hall would be fabulous for a wedding. The staff are lovely and friendly but lack customer service training. And there is a need for far greater attention to detail to justify the prices charged.

So overall, an impressive building which needs some serious attention to detail and some staff training on customer service.
