On our way back down from Edinburgh we called into The County in Aycliffe (not Newton Aycliffe) after discovering it in the GPG and the GBG. Lunch was really tasty: my wife’s steak pie was one of the best she has had in years and I loved the short crust pastry (which I normally dislike and avoid). I had the chicken breast with black pudding and creamed leaks – which was also really tasty – the black pudding going really well with the chicken which tasted of, wait for it, CHICKEN! They also had 4 real ales on!! – sadly, as we were driving further, I couldn’t made full use of these but the one I had was well kept and refreshing. As they also do rooms we will be considering stopping here the next time we are going up to Edinburgh.
