We took advantage of the 2 night Beamish package which has been well described previously. The hotel is in a convenient location , for the Beamish museum, Darlington and Durham. We had stayed previously at the Aston Hotel in Rotherham and found it to be exceptional.
We had recommended this Hotel, due to its location, to friends who are coming over next year from the US, we thought we better check it out, it also coincided with my wifes birthday. I have to say the Hotel is due for a major refurbishment and some of my concerns wouldhopefully be dealt with at that time, I was lead to believe that the Hotel ownership has changed and it will be operating under the Holiday Inn banner.
We also weren`t sure about having the handbasin in the room itself, the room( number 9 on groundfloor) and in particlar the bathroom had a smokey smell about it and I did see what looked like small burns on the carpet close to the handbasin. I mentioned this to reception and one of the ladies said she had noticed the smell but felt it was some type of after shave which was quite pungent, later we realised part of the problem was that the extractor fan in the bathroom was not working, I reported this on the morning as we were leaving for Beamish and was told it would be looked at. No repair was effected and we were given no feedback on the situation. The viewing lens on the door had also been blocked.
Dinner on the first night was very hit and miss I ordered a rare steak which turned out to be passed well done, this was changed and eventually turned out very nice the sauce was good, my wife had the salmon which was also overcooked, all the food was not well presented the dishes we had which were supposed to have salads consisted of 3 or 4 leaves only. The service got quite slow towards the end of the meal, with staff engaged preparing the room for breakfast the following day, no one came to clear our sweet plates and eventually we left without coffee.
The Hotel was very busy with a large corporate party staying for what looked like a training course, this must have been their last night as they seemed very demob happy ,we were disturbed by noise untill the very early hours of the morning, being on the ground floor you got noise coming from the bar and reception as the corridor door was opened, and also one group set up camp in a room on our corridor.
Breakfast was the usual buffet affair and was okay, though my wife asked for an omellete of cheese and tomato, this came burnt black underneath and raw on the top and in the middle.
Dinner on the second night was much changed the visual appearance of dishes and the quality of preparation was noticeably improved , we enjoyed everything about it and this improvement continued though into breakfast the following morning, if you could be guaranteed food like this on every occasion it would be very good.
One major concern on the Friday evening was that a number of fire doors were wedged open, the fire door to the ground floor accomodation corridor was wedged with a large planter form around 1830hrs to at least 2215hrs, this happens presumably because corporate clients were installing equipment to meeting rooms which are also on the accomodation corridor, and being used the following day.
The package is great value ,the visit to Beamish was first class, the staff were all helpful and friendly including the housekeeping staff, and we have decided to revisit in the New Year to see how the changes to the premises have worked out then we can let our friends know if would suit them.
