“Don't even bother!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012 via mobile

We went to the bar part of the pub for a leaving do. Despite us warning them there could be a lot of people coming, there were no extra staff on, just the arrogant land lord! He shouted across the bar about glasses on the pool table when a quiet word would of been much more effective. He then swore at one of our guests because he requested a clean glass that was a different shape to the dirty one provided. And after running out of several different drinks and change, he called last orders at 9.30 telling us off for paying with notes, and also saying one of our party could go and find some change from another shop in town if we were bothered.

We won't be returning, and we won't be recommending it to anyone, ever!

Never met someone so arrogant!

we were visiting family and looking for last minute rooms whilst we were there....what a mistake! i usually book online ahead and check the reviews. On arrival, the receptionist didn't seem to have a clue about anything at all, insisted on payment in full up front of £45 for the night, i found out later from the back of the room door that breakfast would be an additional £5.90 (or around that). we were not told where our room was, what time we had to check out or whether there was wi-fi. i brushed this off......until i saw the room. Like someone else has commented, we would have been better off in the car. On opening the door, there was an instant smell of urine. The bed was dirty, old and very noisy which kept us awake all night. The bathroom (i have to say i have been in bigger port-a-loo's) was very smelly, mouldy and unclean. This actually stopped me from showering the next day for fear that i would have come out dirtier than going in. All in all. I wouldn't suggest you stay there. Ever.

I have never written a review for anything before, but feel compelled after staying in this awful pace. We had payed up front (unfortunately) but even so, we called around to desperately try and find an alternative once we had seen the horrible dirty room. There was a tiny mouldy plastic bathroom, no wardrobe doors and it was generally filthy. The toilet seat hadn't even been cleaned. And the breakfast was atrocious.

I couldn't get out of the place quick enough. Really... Dont stay there. You are better off sleeping in your car it's that bad.

We went for lunch on our wedding anniversary. There's a sensibly small menu of cooked meals, snacks and breakfast served until 2.30. I had fish & chips and my husband had a big breakfast. The menu advises a 20 minute wait as the food is freshly cooked. I think we waited less than that but we were entertained by the Olympics on a large TV screen.
The food was excellent for the money. The bar area is fairly basic but this hotel has a couple of other dining rooms. There's also an outdoor patio area.

Yuk! I had booked in here for two nights. The receptionist on arrival was not particulary welcoming and wanted all the money paid up front, and I soon saw why! Unfortunately it was too late in the evening to find alternative accommodation before I saw what I was expected to sleep in! It was filthy, - pink mould up the joins in the awfull plastic shower, a dirty cracked plastic sink with cigarette burns, dirty fingerprints everywhere, thick dust on the shelf round the bedroom,on the top of the kettle (which had manky water in it) and a vile duvet, though the cover was at least clean. The room was smelly and noisy. I left after the first night and found a hotel further up the roads where I could have a shower as there was no way I was going to use the one at the Crown. It may be cheap, but for only £10 more I got a spotless, nice room up the road with breakfast included!

We stayed at The Crown Hotel after a family reunion and to be quite frank it was shocking!! We left at 3am in the morning.

I have never written a review but our stay here has made me feel as though I couldn't allow anyone to experience the stay we did.

Here is a copy of my complaint email.

'We are writing to let you know of our disappointment of our stay and felt it necessary to put this to you in writing.
We are shocked how you can charge £60 a night for this family room. Bearing in mind that most family rooms cater for a family of 4, we were asked to bring our own bed/travel cot which we did. However on arrival our windows in the room were left open and the carpet was wet with rain. We were not about to put our two year old daughter on the damp floor on the ready bed that we had specially bought so we just put the beds together.
The furniture was in a poor state of repair, the wardrobe was broken, blinds broken, secondary glazing broken, your website is very misleading. We may as well have slept on the high street it was so noisy.
When we finally did fall asleep we were woken up by clanking pipes at 2am. Our stay was so poor that we decided to drive home to Colchester at 3am this morning.
We'd like to point out that we dont like to complain but we felt we had to point out the foregoing so that perhaps you can address these issues for future guests.
We feel the rate of £60 for a room in this state of repair is extortionate especially as it does not include breakfast.
If we had been in a Premier Inn and had this standard of night we know we would get a full refund and feel that this would be a reasonable gesture from you.
We feel that this standard of room is not suitable for a family, you would expect atleast a family room to have a proper bathroom with a bath, somewhere to bathe your child. Unfortunatley two year olds do not tend to stand in a shower.
Look forward to receiving your response by email"

I couldn't even rate this hotel it was so poor.

Do not waste your money!!

The friendly owner welcomed us on arrival - then announced there was no breakfast on offer and sent us off to find our room. I've never heard of a hotel that didn't offer food to guests in the morning, so I'd not thought to check in advance. At 9.00am. the Reception door was locked, so we left the room keys on a table in the dark and deserted dining area on departure. I wondered whether somebody local couldn't be employed to cook breakfasts if the owners don't want to get up? Seems an odd way to run a business in such a competitive industry.

The hotel has been under new management for 12 weeks and it could be lovely - they need to get to grips with repairs and renovations. A handyman with a drill and screwdriver could be usefully employed for a couple of hours, just screwing the light fittings and toilet roll holders back into the walls and putting batteries into the TV remote, although the TV didn't seem to work anyway.

The Crown just needs t.l.c., renovation and a large injection of cash - plus a breakfast chef obviously. But the room was warm, clean and perfectly adequate for our stay.

Room Tip: Room 15 is a family room .... with a mirrored ceiling - honest! Bit of a laugh inherited from the p...
