“What...?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2014

It's as simple as this:
I've made a reservation for this hotel about one month and a half before my trip. When I arrived the hotel was closed (!!!) for renovation.
During one and a half month, no one from the hotel warned me or said anything...

Second really bad experience with Radisson Blu in Norway after being charged twice (!!!) for my entire stay... one month before my trip (!!!) by the Radisson Blu in Ålesund.
Unfortunately, I'm starting to get used (and tired) of this "Norway Radisson nonsense"...

It's strange as in other countries my experience with Radisson Blu (Carlson Rezidor Group) always worked fine.
And it's a pity such a wonderful country with such lovely people having these hotel... hmmm... "blackouts"?

We stayed at Radisson Blu before boarding M/S Expedition for their "Realm of the Polar Bear" Tour around Spitsbergen in August 2011.
Hotel was very clean and tidy, good quality breakfast, and at a reasonable price given the location.
Would recommend staying here if in Longyearbyen

It's not the height of luxury but everything is ok for what you need in the Arctic. Rooms are well appointed (if dated) and of a good size. There was confusion upon arrival as they seem to have lost the booking due to the 'dark season'. However helpful staff soon sorted this out and upgraded me to a superior room. It's close to the main street and shops. As everywhere in Norway, it is expensive and more so than London - it is hard to have a meal with one drink for under $40 - so the prices should be no surprise. However the buffet breakfast is great so stock up there and it will save you money later in the day!

Room Tip: ask for smoking if you do smoke as no windows open

Svalbard is just unique in its self. Stayed from 3-6 January and arrived at 13.00. No other place you can fly to you see stars and northern light in the midle of the day. Just amazing. The hotel was ok and breakfast very nice. Rooms a bit dull - but you are not here to stay in your room. Very nice cafe/restaurant with fireplace. Exellent service and close to everything. Will be back.

Room Tip: Prices changes much from January to April. January 3 times cheaper then April

Surprisingly good for such a remote location. Good buffet meals.
It is hard to sleep when you aren't used to 24hr sunshine.
Polar bears have been seen close to edge of town, if you feel like being eaten.
Spent a couple of days in Oslo on the way and a few in Copenhagen on the way home.

Room Tip: As far from the activities as possible

The Radisson Blu Polar hotel is not a great hotel, but it is a very pleasant hotel at the top of the world. The hotel is the most northerly hotel in the world, located in a harsh but beautiful environment. The hotel is surprisingly pleasant with lots of comfortable features. The hotel and rooms are very warm, the beds are comfortable, the rooms have satellite TV with a good range of channels, including lots of English channels, the rooms have a bar fridge, the bathroom is quite large with good bathtub and shower - however to get the shower working is a bit of an intelligence test (pull down on the end of the water spout to get the shower to work) and you get free wifi (I had three devices on wifi). The wifi is quite good, I had no problems vpning/remote desktoping or with using skype.

The room is also equipped with a small kettle and a few tea bags and coffee sashays. The bar fridge is not well stocked, with very few provisions, but quite useful if you want to keep your own provisions cool. The hotel staff are extremely friendly and courteous - I was only told off (very nicely) once by the desk staff for touching the stuffed polar bear in the lobby. I found the room to be nice and quiet throughout my 3 day stay.

The communal areas are quite comfortable, with comfy seats and a gas fire. You are expected to leave your external foot ware by the door, and so most people walk around in their socks - so make sure you have clean socks without holes. My room was very clean, including the bathroom. One thing I didn't like was the combined soap shampoo provided in the bathroom - I suggest you bring your own.

The hotel breakfast is very good, with a good selection of hot and cold food and a good selection of fruit and cereals. The hotel bar is excellent and worth a visit - very easy to speak with the locals and other visitors. The hotel restaurant is also very good, i had two meals in the restaurant, a lunch and a dinner and I had no complaints. I can't comment on the price of the meals as the meals were paid for by my host (i was attending a meeting at the hotel). The hotel meeting facilities are also quite good. We had a meeting of 10 people which was easily accommodated in the hotel. The hotel provided refreshments, audio visual equipment, flip charts, pens, etc.

You know what, I take back my earlier comments, this is a great hotel, given its remote location, it is extremely comfortable, and it is a lot more than you may expect. If I come back to Spitsbergen, I would have no hesitation staying here again. My only regret was that it was always cloudy while I was here and so we didn't get a chance to see the northern lights.
