Fantastic pub, just inside of the Radisson Blu Polar hotel. Great selection of Norwegian beers on draft as well as various types of aquavit, a seemingly harmless looking Scandinavian liquor that takes no prisoners.
The bar has a lovely atmosphere; dark decor but subtly lit to make it feel warm and inviting, contrasting with the Arctic winter and polar night outside.
The food menu is perfect for casual dining; pizzas, pasta and burgers. Judging by the number of burgers coming out to diners - many of whom are locals - they must be pretty good (the burgers, as well as the locals). There is a also a series of daily specials, listed on a board for the following seven days. These are hearty, filling meals at a rather attractive price; today's was pasta carbonara for NOK99 (approx £10/EUR12) - it was a huge bowl of tagliatelle with a thick, sticky cream sauce and loads of crispy pieces of cooked ham, topped off with lashings of freshly chopped parsley and parmesan. It tasted fab and was very good value.
The staff are very friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable, particularly on music. They have an incredible music library playing, with each of the bar staff having their own preferences - one day it can be electronica, another US alt rock, another the rat pack. Perhaps the best has to be Odd's choice of music that encompasses Queens of the Stone Age, Echo and the Bunnymen, Pearl Jam, Interpol and the Stone Roses. The man is a walking jukebox of cool tunes.
If you're in Longyearbyen and not staying at the Radisson, check out Barentz. Cooler than Mr Cool McCool on a cold day. This is the northernmost bar in the world which is so cool, it's colder than the weather outside.
