“Tranquil and Peaceful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

Derrynane is arguably the best beach in county Kerry. Away from the main road, it sits in a small bay which is almost cut off from the sea. The water is beautiful and clear, although jellyfish lurk during the summer! There is also ample parking and easy access. A great spot to wile away an hour or two, especially if one has been driving for a long time to get there!

“One of Ireland's nicest beaches”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2012

Derrynane Beach is part of the Derrynane National Historic Park and is a Blue flag beach. There are four different beaches along its length.

'Danger' beach is the biggest and is the closest to Derrynane House. Parking is available at the house. It is a long open sandy beach with beautiful dunes and surf. It has dangerous rip currents so is best avoided for swimming, but is fantastic for walking, jogging, playing etc. The dunes are protected habitats and more information about them can be got at Derrynane house.

There are two smaller beaches further west which are more sheltered and perfect for swimming. In the summer, lifeguards are present. Parking is available but get there early on sunny days in the summer as this fills up.

Derrynane harbour has a small very safe, sheltered beach. Derrynane Sea Sports are located here and kayaks, dinghys and sailboards can be rented here. Limited parking is available at the harbour which fills up quickly on good days.

A visit to the graveyard at Abbey Island is recommended. The ruins of the former abbey and setting must make it one of the nicest cemeteries.
