“Tired hotel, nice staff - fantastic location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2010

We stayed in the hotel for a few days over the recent Bank Holiday weekend. The hotel itself is perfectly situated looking out on the estuary. The views are beautiful. The staff are nice in a B&B way, very homely. Unfortunately the hotel is a bit tired. If hard beds, painted breeze block and chip board roof is your thing then this is the place. It's like time stopped about 1991. The staff couldn't have been nicer, the food was far better than I would have expected. The building really lets everything else down. We really enoyed our stay and have booked for a week in June unfortunately we will stay elsewhere.

This was our first visit to Derrynane in Caherdaniel, on the famous Ring of Kerry, which boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in Western Europe. Don't be in a hurry if you're driving --there are miles of twisting roads to negotiate. The Derrynane Hotel sits on the edge of a bay overlooking the Atlantic. It's ideal for beaches and long interesting walks. The hotel is very comfortable, the food very good value, and the staff extremely friendly. After the long drive from the East Coast of Ireland we decided not to get up too early the next day, At 10 am we got a call from a girl in Reception, saying "We noticed you didn't come down for breakfast this morning. Would you like breakfast brought to your room?" Needless to day, we were staggered! Our order was delivered within minutes., setting the scene for a lovely week-end break. Well done Derrynane!

Whilst my partner and I did not stay in the hotel itself (It is currently closed for refurbishment following a fire), we did stay in the hotels onsite self-catering holiday homes.
A stunningly decorated, large open-plan 3 bedroom house (MES), with breathtaking sea views, and absolutely everything you could wish for - from a potato peeler to dishwasher blocks to a tumble dryer! The house was spotlessly clean, and made a very comfy get away for the 2 nights that we were there.
Christine, at reception, is quite possibly the loveliest woman on the planet. To quote my partner, "If more hotel receptionists were like her, more people would stay in hotels".
Whilst the hotel is rather secluded in terms of nightlife etc, it is perfectly situated to explore the Ring of Kerry. I will definitely be staying here again.

Mary O'Connor and her wonderful staff are the best advertisement for the Derrynane Hotel and Holiday Homes. From the moment we arrived at the holiday home, late in the evening and a day earlier than booked, nothing was too much trouble for Mary and her staff. Our house was made available to us, and milk, tea ,juice all readily provided for us as the nearby shops were already closed for business until the next morning. During our stay absolutely nothing was any trouble for Mary and the staff, and they were all so very cheerful and helpful no matter what time of day. Mary O'Connor is a truly wonderful hostess and we will be returning to her establishment as soon as we can.

My family and I have just returned from a week long stay in The Derrynane Holiday Homes, which are adjacent to the beautiful Derrynane Hotel, overlooking the ocean.
We stay in the Hotel always when in Derrynane, however due to a recent fire it is closed for rennovations. I must whole heartedly agree with all of the other positive reviews. I could not fault this well run hotel or its staff. Derrynane and Caherdahiel are truly a little piece of heaven and nothing would stop me from getting there for a break!!
With three children under the age of four, including a teething 5 month old, it can be difficult to find a break which suits everybody, however we truly were all very happy in Derrynane.
The holiday home is completed to an extremely high spec and I would be very very surprised if anybody could find fault. Each home has a fenced in back garden which is very safe for small children, and to the front are private patio areas which are a complete sun trap!!
Mary, with her very warm welcome, and her team catered for our every need, and even gave the children free reign of all the toys in the Hotel Playroom to take to our house. Christine on reception was very warm and friendly to us as usual, Eileen and Patricia saw to all our domestic needs! The world famous Waterville Links Golf Course is only 15 mins drive, and numerous beaches within walking distance. We particularly loved Derrynane Beach, where it is safe for the children and sheltered from any winds. Water sports and horse riding were fantastic. There is a real holiday buzz in Derrynane. Dining out was very nice in the village in the The Blind Piper, however the restaurant in the Derrynane Hotel is my absolute favourite. But unfortunately the hotel is closed until next Spring due to the fire. We have already re-booked another week for next May and next September and we can't wait.
We really feel like very welcome guests in Derrynane, and there is nowhere in the world as beautiful or as relaxing

This was our second trip to this well run family hotel. The staff and management are wonderfully attentive, the hotel served quality food, the restaurant has some amazing views over the bay but the wine list needs expanding. Unfortunately it is now closed for the season due to a fire which took a number of rooms out of service. We spend two nights in the Hotel before being relocated to the cottages on site to continue our vacation. We plan to return to sample the hospitality next year when it reopens.

Smart and spacious, our holiday home at Derrynane Hotel delivered all we needed and much, much more.

Open-plan living downstairs meant we could all be in the one space without crowding each other - especially important on wet days.

I enjoy cooking and loved the well-laid out kitchen with its walnut presses and black granite tops. There was crockery and cutlery aplenty, though I missed a garlic press. A picnic bag was a wonderful touch - an invitation to a simpler way of life.

The writing desk on the loft-style upper floor came with internet access, allowing us a daily e-mail fix.

Bedrooms worked well with the older children downstairs and the toddler in a cot in the hideaway bedroom upstairs - it comes with an ocean view, a super king-size bed, and a mind-altering powershower.

Though the hotel was closed for repairs, staff were warm, welcoming and happy to give advice on where to go and what to do. And just because, the children were given chocolate bars whenever they showed up at reception.

The peninsula offers endless choices for sightseeing but we happily circled around Derrynane House, the home of Daniel O'Connell, and its stunning blue-flag beach.

Happy as sand boys, the children dug for Ireland, re-working craters started earlier in the day and moulding Battenburg cakes good enough to eat. Swimming was fresh, brief and invigorating. All this, and not a jellyfish in sight.

We'll be back.
