“Friendly, welcoming and stunning views,”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

Stayed here last week for just one night. We were travelling around the Ring of Kerry, and having not booked anything, we were just keeping our look out for somewhere nice to stay. The welcome from Mary and her staff was genuine and so welcoming.......great to see that the famous Irish hospitality is still around!!!! Our room was spotless and the sea views amazing. We dined in the hotel restaurant that night and we were extremely impressed by the food served....top quality and reasonably priced. Breakfast in the morning was equally good. We highly recommend the Derrynane Hotel. Well done to Mary and her excellent staff!

My husband @ I booked in for 5 nights in early July, but we stayed for 9, as the food, seaviews, @ the great rates, plus the staff were 5*. The weather was very mixed, but walking brochure that is provided by the hotel gave us some excellent outings in a beautiful part of the world. We had a lovely time in Catherdanial with all the excellent beaches @ views, would highly recommend the whole package.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a suburb seaview

The hotel is located so close to the sea our first shot with the tennis ball bounced out of the court and into the ocean. The location is excellent with amazing views and Mary the owner and all the staff are incredibily friendly and helpful. The grounds of the hotel are very well maintained providing amazing views over the coastline and there is a lovely sandy beach only 5 minutes walk away. Pony tracking and water sports also located close by. The hotel breakfast is lovely and day time meals provide good value for money. Many thanks to Mary and all the people working there.

Room Tip: ask for a sea view

Stayed in the Derrynane Hotel self catering apartments this week. We were quoted 850 euros 'special rate' for the week in question. The rate increased to 1600 euros the week after. We thought 850 was a bit pricey but the hotel advertises a children's playroom and a swimming pool which while outdoors is claimed to be heated. We have 3 small children (3,4 and 5) and booked at the 850 rate so we would have options on a rainy day (a frequent occurrence in that part of the world).

While the apartments were of a high standard everything else was a disappointment

. The Playroom is shabby with old/broken toys. There were some 1980's video games most of which didn't work. One actually is an empty shell.

. The pool was freezing. There was NO possibility that small children would remain in the water for longer than a few minutes.

We drove to Killarney and Kenmare on two wet days to access swimming pools and indoor play facilities having paid for same at the Derrynane Hotel.

. The food is really substandard. It's poor country-wedding fare. I had a helping of mustard mashed potatoes on the only night that we ate at the hotel that kept me awake all night.

The staff ARE friendly but there is a whiff of b***s*** in the air. I heard one of the staff talking about their "lovely playroom and lovely fitness centre" (it appeared that about half of the machines in the latter were working).

We were willing to forgive a lot however as it IS a fantastic location and the kids loved beach at O'Carroll's Cove close by. (There are a couple of streams that flow down across the beach to the sea and offer great opportunities to dig trenches and dams etc). HOWEVER when my wife went to pay the bill she was told that VAT (13% I think) hadn't been included in the quote. I have never had this happen before and it was the last straw. We had put the very poor meal on the bill also and the VAT was charged on that as well - so we paid double VAT on my insomniac repast (I only checked it after we had left).

Substandard and sneaky. Avoid.

A holiday cottage can be rented in the locality in the 400 euro range.

Stayed here one night while making my way around the Ring of Kerry. Views are astounding; it's directly on the water. Rooms were quite large although the bathroom was NYC-size (quite small). Decor is straight from the 50's but the food was fantastic and the bar had a heavy pour! Staff (including Mary the Managing Director) was as sweet as could be. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Definitely opt for an ocean view. It would not be the same experience with a non-water view room.
