“Lovely Hotel, shame about the location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2009

This hotel is clean, the food outstanding, the staff friendly and helpful and the entertainment lighthearted. However if you want a day on the beach you have a bit of a walk. The Nana beach resort opposite owns the beach and charges silly money for beds and umbrellas because they obviously don't want you there. A walk to Stalis beach is about 20mins and the beds are reasonable albeit a little close together. The hotel is nearer Stalis than Hersonissos. Our room was near the pool and main building so not too much of a climb. The main road is close and the traffic a bit noisy but not too bad. However we found that the hills nearby created clouds (probably okay earlier in the year) but if you had a car like we did, other parts of the island would be cloud free.

so hotel great, location not.

We stayed in September 2009 after chosing this hotel partly from reviews on Trip Advisor which mentioned good food, service and cleanliness. The hotel has all of these, we loved the greek food mixed with a bit of German cuisine plus they have English Breakfast food/ chips to chose from. The staff were very polite and friendly and the spacious room was cleaned daily. There is a bit of a climb to get to the higher numbered rooms but it's good to keep fit! If you are elderly or were going with elderly relatives it may be a bit tiring but there are rooms available without a climb.
We're both in our 50s and love having the luxury of a good hotel and usually hire a car to head off for walking on the hills. On somedays we'll sit and read on the balcony/ by the pool.I really like somewhere fairly peaceful and I found the Grand Hotel a little noisy. The slight problem is that it is near the main E75 road to Heiraklion, so you could hear traffic from the balcony (although we had a good sea view). I could live with that but then there is the entertainment crew- or animators as they are called. They have a noisy pa by the pool side so that nearly everyone on the complex can hear the competitions/ acqua aerobics etc. I called reception and asked if the volume could be turned down which is was, a little. It's fine if you love that sort of thing- and really want to get into the spirit of it all but I found it a bit noisy.
The other noise came from the Kareoke/ music from the neighbouring hotel which usually finished at 11.00 (but wouldn't be heard by all the rooms on this large complex).
So, we really liked the hotel, one of the cleanest we've stayed in on Crete but I wouldn't go back sadly because of the noise. However, this may not be off putting to younger people with families who would enjoy the many free activities they have to offer.

Just finished our week long stay in the "Grand Hotel". It was 6-th I and my wife trip to Greek Islands (first in Crete). This hotel is the best we visited although we stayed in 5-star hotels previously. Clean, huge food choice, pools -all possibility to relax. The main impression is of stuff. They smile you not for money – it’s different from Turkey or Egypt. I simply fall in love to Greek people. The last day they made BBQ party that appeared to be a great performance with life music, singers, and dancers. At the end not just guests but the whole hotel stuff danced and song; and you feel visiting a family party.
To be just there is another hotel “Nana Beach” over the road. It’s 4-stars as well, with better location (flat, adjusted to sea, and very green). I have no information about its food and stuff.

Amazing is the only word for our holiday. Myself, husband and 1.5 yr old flew out with another 18 people to our wedding. Not all of the party stayed in our hotel but those who did loved it. Theres one downside - the hills. With a buggy and a 77 yr old gran its pretty bad. I read others reviews and thought it couldnt be that bad... but it really is. Saying that, all the positives well out weigh the hills.

Rooms - your standard sized rooms. Cleaned daily and clean towels and sheets provided every day.
Staff - could ask for more helpfull and pleasant. TONY, well Tony is in a class all of his own. Youll find him at the lobby bar in the evening. He is some man. Lets just say he like to keep the Raki flowing to his punters.
Food - breakfast and dinner, fantastic. A range of all sorts. Kids choices too
Pools - spotlessly clean, great kids pool too but its at top of hill lol
Entertainment - very basic, nothing spectacular but there was something mostly every night. We went out mostly every night after dinner anyway to local bars in stalis for a few hours.
Area - i thought perfect. You step out hotel and your in Stalis not hersonissos. Its perfect as you in a quiet area with nothing beside you. A 15 minute walk (downhill) and your in the heart of Stalis (best place for night life) (cheaper). A30 min walk the other way and your in the heart of Hersonissos (more expensive).

the beaches arent great but i dont like beaches anyway.

We had our reception in the hotel too and my, did they go out their way to please us. Even through in a wedding cake for us.

That really sums the hotel up, they constantly go out their way to please you.

I stayed at this hotel for week with my wife and 2 year old child and thank goodness!! I reckon earlier in the year would be a different story?

Hotel rooms was busy but hotel pool and lobby wasnt? Many people used this hotel as a base as it was to a very high standard and best in area!!! Many people commented on this site the animation team well sorry guys you meant to be working not on Holiday !!!
We had 4 overcast days that the guests were bored and this is when they are meant to earn their money!! NOPE nowhere to be seen. Many people used the servies of renting a vehicle in the lobby to go find our own entertainment (Very quick and easy. Definately recommend Agois Nich and Elouda Beach 30 mins away)

Guys make sure you pack long trousers as the restaurant only allows you to dinner with the aforementioned and NO beach shorts for breakfast. Food was well cooked and a fine selection (Very repetitive) however not much on kids menu and the selection did not change ie.. No Theme nights apart from a BBQ night 17euros (No one went)

Hotel is based on a hill, luckily we was in room 604 at the bottom and on the level on the main pool however walking to the kids pool please take hiking gear and make sure you dont leave anyrthing in your room as yo will not climb this hill twice in a day (very steep)

Location is somewhat to desired out on a limb!!! Based upon main road the hotel is surrounded by nothing but a funny litte bar located just outside hotel Bar Romantika (Cheap beer). Closer to Stalis 15 mins walk and Hersonnossis been 20 mins walk I recommend a taxi 7 euros each way to both resorts, as the road you walk next to is very dangerous

Hotel needs some atmosphere not just for the kids but for the adults aswell?

Overall decent week away had better holidays. Dont recommend for children under 5,

Craig, Lou and Harrison

Stayed at this hotel from 13th-20th August with my wife, travelling with Ocean Village as part of a cruise/stay package.
Arrived 7 hours late from Gatwick courtesy of Thomas Cook Airlines (what a wonderful efficient outfit they are!). First impressions were disappointing and not what we were expecting. The room, 1601, was sitauted at the top of a very steep hill, which meant you couldn't just pop back to the room if you'd forgotten something.
The patio area was sitauted in an alleyway between 2 buildings. The furnishings were very basic but it was very clean. We aslked to change but were told this was impossible as the hotel was full.
The hotel itself is very nice, but let down by the rooms and the hillside location. It's also in quite an isolated position next to a very busy main road (watch out crossing),with a 30-40 minute walk into Hersonissos, but only 15 mins into Stalis, which has little character.
We had a broken shower head which was reported, but not fixed all week. Also when you showered the drain overflowed on the floor. The following day it started to smell and was reported..again not repaired but the bathroom was disinfected very day after.
The staff attitude was poor, leading to inferior customer service.
The food though was good and plenty of variety at breakfast and dinner. The restaurant was very busy and dress code went out of the window, with a lot of non UK clients wearing shorts in the evening.
Lunches were also good and reasonably priced. As others have stated the drinks are expensive and beer is 2 euros cheaper outside.
There are 3 pools..top for families, middle for adults only (although no one pays attention to this), bottom pool is lively and is the place to go if you wish to join in the activities. We used Pool 2 and there were always plenty of sunbeds, with no need to reserve one.
The entertainment at night was not great and was not on every night.
They advertised a greek theme evening with a barbecue poolside, which they tried to promote every day, but wanted to charge 17 euros each which they said was for the entertainment. This is an awful lot of money, particularly if you're travelling with kids as they still charge 8.50 each. We refused to pay and ate in the restaurant as normal. You could actually watch the entertainment for free as you had to walk through Pool 1 area...it didn't look much to me and comprised of just a greek group.
All the hotels we've been to throughout Europe normally put on a theme evening for free.

Overall we were disappointed with our stay here. The decor of the Hotel says four star, but the standard of the rooms coupled with the isolated location coupled with poor customer service, would class it a the poorer end of 3 star.
If you stay at this hotel ,make sure your room number is less than 1100, or you will have a steep climb. If you have any kind of mobility problems, then avoid this hotel.

Absolutely LOVED this hotel - so clean, friendly staff who couldnt do enough for you and a lively animation team who worked really hard to entertain. The food was amazing, they were constantly replenishing and the choice was huge and of fantastic quality, we never had a bad meal. We have been on two Mark Warner holidays and this was just as good if not better. I was initially worried about it being very hot but the air con was free in the rooms and it was very breezy in Crete generally so even thou some days it was up to 38/ 40 degrees it never felt humid and somedays was actually chilly to get out of the pool due to the breeze. The pools are salt water which once u get used to was fine (need goggles really). If I had to say anything bad about it I would say 1. it wasnt close enough to the beautiful SANDY beach (stalis) which was also excellent for kids in terms of sand. Some days were quite rough so you could not ever let them play without being in with them but I am sure there were calmer days but we didnt go on those days. It wasnt that far though but the main road was very dangerous so use the underpasses. 2. The kids club was right up the hill ! Phew and the accomodation was built into the hills so it may be hard for the less mobile but the lower rooms (100- 108 ish or 500-510 ish) were fine and almost flat from the hotel. 3. Kids used to play climbing on walls outside the restaurant as they tend to finish dinner quicker than us leisurely eaters but one wall had a very BIG drop (20/30 feet) other side and no railings, just plants so really worried about that. 4. Kids part of the room was at the front near the door. Would have preferred our room at the front as we were ground floor but if door locked its OK as long as they cant operate the window themselves! Anyway just to recap loved it - looking to go back - fantastic.
