“Family holiday 2012”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

Having just returned from a wonderful two week family holiday to the Grand Hotel, Hersonissos, Crete, I thought I would put pen to paper. Having travelled to Spain for the last 6 years to a friend’s apartment that takes some beating we arrived apprehensive and not sure quite what to expect. The hotel was modern, very clean, and the staff were very polite speaking excellent English (Puts us to shame that we speak very little Greek). The rooms were spacious, clean, modern, and had aircon. The TV had English channels which was great to catch up with the news. The room had a safe which was 30 Euro’s for 2 weeks. The room towels were changed every day and the bedding every couple of days. The 3 pools, fun pool with entertainment, relaxing pool for over 16’s, and children’s pool with slides were clean, warm, and not overcrowded. There were plenty of sun beds; however the rule that you can’t reserve the beds seemed to be overlooked by the hotel staff, so note if you want a well positioned bed around the pools be prepared to be up around 7:30am to reserve it. You can hire pool towels for 5 Euro a week with a 5 Euro refundable deposit which you change every day (All inclusive this was free). The food was second to none with a vast selection for breakfast and the evening meal. The restaurant staff, in particular George and Vasilis were excellent, very polite and made a real fuss of us all. The wearing of long trousers for the evening meal was again not enforced by the hotel, however it was nice to dress up and make an effort. We decided on half board this year as we don’t normally eat during the day having stuffed out on breakfast and only drink water (40c for a litre bottle) around the pool. We always had a beer around 5ish at the pool bar before heading up to change for dinner. Drinks weren’t expensive (2.90 for a local beer and @2.80 for the local wine). The activities and evening entertainment provided by the animation team were great fun; in particular the volleyball and water polo where language wasn’t a problem. I made a number of great friends from around the world. The animation shows were a laugh from start to finish and a bit tongue in cheek, however the kids loved it. If you fancy a change the local sandy beach and village (Stalis) is only 15 minute walk (two beds, umbrella, free wifi, drink, or sandwich - 4 Euro’s). Would I go back? Almost definitely, we hope to meet up with a number of friends that have been going to the Grand Hotel for the last 6-8 years.

sadly and we can write this review honestly. firstly as regular(adult) returners to the Grand we have had wonderful service and attention. Even this last visit(sadly) because although we were half board it was their first year of trying out all inclusive.... Oh my goodness what a dreadful difference that made. You had people at the breakfast and eve meal like scavaengers and over filling their plates and leaving some. the mess they left at the service stations was a disgrace as the staff were continually cleaning up after these onbnoxious people.(not all the all inclusives stooped to that level, about 85% though and yes i can be accurate about that, helpful or not). I have to say i am not English but WELSH and i have to say it was the french , germans that behaved the worse ooh and those from rough areas in North England, you know who you are....
Our room as usual fab and views spectacular. Decided after first(and we were half board) breakfast fiasco.... we ate out everyday. the only saving grace the pool restaurant as you alll
inclusives had to pay. how so patheticaclly annoyed were you. get a life .... especially as you dive for all lunch time reataurant was open for you....
After first onslaught of the fight fpr the toaster or food(which i am not used too at four stars, this is the reason i do not do All inclusive, you get what you paid for!!!! end of).
Dispite this, as there were staff there that still knew us we had good holiday and that goes without saying as it truly has fab views and staff stay wonderfully friendly under the extreme pressures.(personally i felt this year they were treated badly by tourists).
So message to the grand hotel management, my husband and i had been there at least five times and now we stop!! We chose the grand for location(suited us, peace, entertainment if you chose and selection of various pools and spa etc... Plus the several dining options. All inclusive a truly bad move. This honest accoutn , staff were wonderful under very extreme circumstances and rudeness of tourist worldwide... all inclusive food and drink disgraceful... and the Half board had to suffer the same.... The staff we have got to know over the last several years and have remained probably because they have no choice as most poeple in life struggled on and supported you well. However, and sadly we will never return to the grand. My husband stays in plush hotels all over the world because of work. We thought we found a excellent quality hotel, chilled, still reserved and proud, but enough so that he did not hsave to wear shirt and tie to evening dinner all the time.... But still dress appropriately. Now you have made a mockery of your hotel. If it succeeds so be it. I just hope the staff that have stuck it out find work else where. A resounding NO WE WILL NOT BE BACK TO THE GRAND. We will return to Crete as it is our favourite holiday chill out destination...

Room Tip: if you do not have kids . DO not go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were looking at several hotels in the Crete area when we were attracted to the great pictures on th website. When we arrived some of the reception staff were quite miserable but had great English skills. The bell boy was very helpful and and the waiters were very friendly especially George and Vasilis. The food was very nice but we got a bit bored with the same food for a week day after day. The room was well eqiupped and had a brilliant sea view but would have been nice to have a kettle in the room. The only bad point of our stay was the fact none of the rules were enforced. For example the relaxing pool was not for under 16s. Everyday really young children were splasing around and making noise. Also the rule about sun beds was not enforced at all with no sun beds available at any point during the day. Overall a lovely hotel, great service, clean and friendly. Definatley stay here again!

Room Tip: Get a room with near the quite pool, its calmer and has some great sea views...

We have just returned from a wonderful two week family holiday to the Grand Hotel, Hersonissos Crete. The hotel is very impressive and surpassed all our expectations. The photos of the hotel on different websites don't quite do it justice. We were impressed by the cleanliness of the hotel, the friendliness and helpfulness of all members of staff, the quality and choice of food at breakfast and dinner (we were half-board) and the fun activities and evening entertainment provided by the animation team. Our 16 year old twins participated in many of the activities, they enjoyed the daily beach volleyball sessions in particular and made many new friends of different nationality. We stayed round the hotel most days but also loved visiting the beach, bars and shops at Stallis, a 15 minute walk away from the hotel.
We would definitely return to this hotel again as we feel that it has something quite unique and special, not too big and impersonal but warm and friendly with exceptional quality of service and standard of hospitality. We felt sad to leave and want to thank all the staff for helping to make our holiday so memorable and enjoyable.

Room Tip: The superior rooms were spacious and elegant with plasma tv on the wall and very comfy beds.

This was our first trip to Crete. It took a little while for us to choose The Grand Hotel but after continually checking previous reviews decided to book eleven nights half board. We were definately not disappointed. On arrival, after a very quick check-in our luggage and ourselves were taken promptly to our room in a little car as the hotel is built in the hillside and was quite steep. Our room overlooked the relaxing pool. We had clean towels and bedding daily, all the maids were so polite. The towels were pure white, and soft which we have never experienced abroad before. The hotel was exceptionally clean, the grounds immaculate, all three pools were lovely, although we only used one of them, the relaxing pool, which was just for adults and children over 16. This wasn't monitored by staff, so often young children did actually use the pool, but it wasn't really a problem to us. The pool area was always very clean, the staff powerwashed the area each morning. Bins always emptied. Sunbeds were reserved daily by everyone, including ourselves, but at least we used them, some people reserved the beds and went off for the day and did not return to quite late in the afternoon. I do think that needs addressing. There is a sign in 'English' stating that beds should not be reserved. The Main building with restaurant and lounge bar was very pleasant. We were always greeted so warmly by George, taken to our table and very well cared for. I assume that it would get a little busy during high season as it was buffet style, but it really wasn't that bad for us. We also took advantage of the complimentary meal in the Al a Carte Aegeon Restaurant, this was lovely the staff couldn't do enough for you which was the case throughout our stay. We had a lovely waitress in the lounge bar who was very good at her job and such a lovely girl. I would definately recomment this hotel for his warmth and cleanliness. I would say that the hotel is in a very quiet area, we did walk to Stalis, a small resort about fifteen minutes away, which was lovely. Hersonissos is much busier, and about half an hours walk away. You can get the bus which was 1.60 euros one way. The hotel didn't have much entertainment in the evenings, but other than that, it is a very good hotel deserving of it's four stars and would definately return sometime in the future.

We spent two wonderful weeks at the Grand Hotel, Hersonissos, Crete at the beginning of July 2012. From the moment we entered the hotel every member of staff we came across was polite, helpful and cheerful and it was obvious that they were well trained and professional.
We had the Full Inclusive Option which we would definitely recommend as the food was superb and varied daily and all the drinks were of a premium quality.
There was a lot of variation in the Dionyssus Restaurant to suit all tastes and the maitre d’,Georgios, was second to none,
The À La Carte Restaurant food was some of the best food we have tasted, coupled with the great sea views and comfortable surroundings made this one of our favourite nights. The Pizzeria food was also lovely and again, beautiful sea and mountain views.
The bedroom was spacious and clean with comfy beds, the bedlinen being changed regularly. The air conditioning was brilliant, especially at night, as we were there during a heat wave. The bathroom was also kept clean by the efficient maids and had a bath/shower so the choice was nice, fresh towels each day, and complimentary bath and shower washes. Patio doors opened on to a private balcony looking out onto pool and stunning sea views.
There were 3 lovely pools laid out with beautiful gardens and everywhere was immaculate. At the Family Pool the fantastic animation team (Lynsey, Lyma, Gabor, Adam and Luca), offered lots of different daily activities:- zumba, aquafit, water polo, boules, volleyball, football, darts and many other games. However, if you wanted a quiet day then the "Adults Pool" provided that. Also, if you have young children then the top pool with the slides looked great..
A fantastic hotel, which you cannot fail to be impressed by the level of service offered here. The staff are just so professional and full of enthusiasm, from Maria at the buffet restaurant to Vera in the main pool bar, the waiters and waitresses who did everything with a smile, both in the Restaurants and the Lobby Bar, The Maitre d’ Georgios, the food and beverage manager, Manolis and Nikos, one of our daily servers, could not have done enough for us.
A lovely, relaxing holiday in a wonderful hotel run efficiently by Manager Nikos and Depute Manager Katerina. I would recommend this hotel - don't let the Greek economy put you off!
