“if you can't stand germans ..dont go!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2012

We've just returned home from a 14 night stay AI at the Grand Hotel. End June -beg July 2012
Hotel- rooms very spacious, clean.
Food- some is good, but is very repetitive and lunch times are terrible- pool bar serves snacks like burgers- (wouldn't recommend these), toasties and fries, main restaurant - mainly caters for german preferences at lunch. People fail to use the tongs provided for removing bread, some foods from the servery. Hands of guest are not provided with anti-bac handwash- like most other hotels on entrance to dining hall. Men are required to wear trousers for dinner., no dress shorts, 3/4 pants are not acceptable. Altho some peoples dress sense left a lot to be desired- going straight for dinner in clothes they had been to the pool in. So not really a place to 'dress to dinner'.
Grounds- well kept, however the hotel is based on a mountain side- kids 'fun pool' is situated with some rooms at the top of the mountain- not ideal if you have very young children like we had. So not recommended for elderly, and possibly unfit.
Animation team- are very rude- they run a kids club daily, we took the children two days on the run for a look around and to take part in the activities. Animation team running the club ignored us on arrival, didn't offer the children to take part in activities and completely blanked us on both occasions.
Evening Shows-- lead by animation team- in total there are 4 shows, a comedy, a magic show, a dance and a mystery show. The shows are repetitive and boring, not really worth watching.
Hotel Staff- 98% of the staff are really friendly, but the rest let the hotel down. The staff on reception are rude and sarcastic, had to wait 4 days for toilet to be fixed.
The duty manager is a rude, horrible lady, who doesn't resolve problems. Her basic answer is if you don't like it, leave.
Waiters in the dining hall during breakfast/evening meals, some are ok, but again, german orientated. All the waiters wanted to know you and couldn't do enough for you towards end of holiday- after a tip! Got a little much in the end with mithering and repetition of food- ate out several times.
German people despite warning in brochure do the usual of 'hogging the sunbeds' at silly o'clock. Had several problems whilst at the hotel with the rudeness of these people in the swimming pool & areas, pushing and shoving in dining hall at breakfasts and teas, being constantly drunk and picking arguments and brawls with anybody. Not a good environment for children. One such instance, watching a 'family show' during the evening and a drunken german lady fell onto my daughter who was sitting watching the show, also knocked my husband and nearly sent our 7 month old baby flying to the bottom of the amphitheater. The same lady at the end of the show tried to hit me on the way out, obviously alcohol fueled. Daughter was left bruised and shaken. Animation team didnt want to help and management couldnt be bothered either. The duty manager was a waste of time and advised me 'there was nothing she could do'.
All inclusive- finishes at 10.30pm at night, waiters go missing from 10pm so no further drinks can be ordered.
SPA- wellness centre- run by a rude german man, who is very ignorant.
Children are left roaming the hotel grounds during meal times, also during show times. Very frustrating when trying to carry hot food/soup into dining hall when children on knees skidding past you, or infront of you.
There are 3 pools at the hotel; the main pool which is hounded by the animation team, the kids fun pool at the top of the mountain and the cocoon pool (over 16s only and whispering is even too loud amongst the older generation). Please note only the main pool and cocoon pools are cleaned at night, we noticed.
After our stay, We wont be returning to the Grand Hotel. Which is a shame as its a spotless hotel, but after our experience, its not for us. If you've booked or thinking of going, please take with you, your patience and be prepared to fight for your food!

Room Tip: Low room number, otherwise you end up in the hills

There aren't many more superlatives to say which hasn't already been said about this hotel and I agree with all of them. Overall what a really nice hotel which is basically varous different rooms (3 storeys high) spread around the hillside grounds with the benefits of a hotel.
My wife, self & 3 yr old son have just returned from the Grand Hotel and put it up there with the best to date (Of many) and it comes a close second to our honeymoon hotel Elysium, Cyprus.
Nothing is too much trouble and everything you need is within easy reach. ie Three supermarkets nearby, beach, bus stop right outside the hotel for Hersonnosos (5 mins), Stalis, Malia (10 mins) & Agios Nicholas 40 mins for under 8 euros.
We booked last minute with Thomas Cook and got a Family room for the same price as a Superior Room which was on the ground floor less and than 10 metres from the Main Pool Bar..bonus in the afternoon for an Ouzo Special & a cold glass Mythos.
There was never a fight for sunbeds and bed reservation is rightly frowned upon. The room we had was divided by a sliding door, very spacious and had wow factor first impressions. They were also well sound-proofed so always guaranteed 14 good night's sleep.
We went half board and found lunch in either of the two poolside bars very good or local supermarket adequate. The wine & spirits were expensive but local beer 2.9 euros a pint so that and a bottle of wine, or several from the supermarket did us nicely.
The only very slight niggle we had was perhaps there could have been a themed buffet in the evening(s) & perhaps outside perfomances to give us & the Animation Team a bit of a break!?
I congratulate all who developed & maintain this hotel for listening to guests and providing the perfect long awaited holiday for my family.

Room Tip: The family rooms tended to be on the ground floors of each block and quieter if away from the loud p...

nice hotel, clean and presentable, some steep paths to rooms so not great if you are not fit especially in the heat.
the location is not great, the beach is a fair walk across the road at the front of the hotel or through a small underpass, so if you want a close beach location this is not for you.
Also the hotel is located out of the neares town.
The food was very good and the pools very nice, friendly staff and great value.
Overall nice hotel but not the best location, depends what you want from your holiday.

My boyfriend and I booked this holiday 5 days before we flew and were looking for a relaxing holiday after our first year at University, and this is exactly what we got. From the moment we entered the hotel every member of staff we came across was polite, helpful and cheerful. We mainly stayed at the "Lively Pool" as lots of activities were on offer with the animation team, Lynsey, Gabor, Adam and Luca, who were great fun. Water polo, boules, volleyball, football, darts and many other games were put on for people to enjoy. However, if you wanted a quiet day then the "Adults Pool" provided that. Also, if you have young children then the top pool with the slides also looked great. We went in early June and so there were plenty of free sunbeds.
The room was spacious and clean, beds were comfy and the air conditioning was brilliant as we went during a heat wave so our room could get very warm during the day, if we did not shut the blackout screen, due to the lovely big patio doors going out to our private balcony with lovely pool and sea view. The bathroom was also kept clean by the efficient maids and had a bath/shower so the choice was nice, fresh towels each day, and complimentary bath and shower gel...although I wouldn't recommend the shampoo to anyone with anything longer than very short hair as it was not of great quality!
We stayed on an all inclusive basis and the food was brilliant, lots of variation in the Dionyssus Restaurant to suit all tastes and cultures and the maitre d' was second to none, he made us feel so welcome. One thing i should note is that some people came in and went straight to the buffet then went and found a seat, I imagine this could be quite frustrating (although they never showed it) for the waiters and waitresses trying to take drinks orders as you should wait, be seated, order drinks then go and get your food. On a few occasions people who went to get food first ended up sitting in someone else's place or sitting on tables with no cutlery. If they had had a little more patience it would have saved some confusion. Another thing to mention is that it is expected that men will wear long trousers for the evening meals, so remember to pack a pair! A man was complaining about this dress code when we were there but what does he expect, he was at a 4* hotel for an evening meal...!
The À La Carte Restaurant food was some of the best food we have tasted, coupled with the great sea views and comfortable surroundings made this one of our favourite nights. The Pizzeria food was also lovely and again, beautiful sea and mountain views.
One thing to bare in mind is the fact that the hotel is on the side of a mountain and if you were to get a room at the top of the resort it may be a tricky walk for elderly or disabled people, however, I have no doubt that if you were to raise this point the lovely receptionists would do their best to help.
From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we felt comfortable and well looked after and would definitely return! Loved this holiday and have absolutely no faults to raise with Grand Hotel, I understand people have different tastes and expectations but I would have no qualms recommending this hotel to anyone!

We recently returned from our holiday at the Grand Hotel, we read reviews before we went and said to ourselves it won't be that good.Well it was better than that , we had a great time food was good service was great, the rooms were lovely and clean.
The two most outstanding members of staff were George who shown us to our table every day and Mariana who waited are table, thank you both and the rest of the hotel team .Well done

Room Tip: there is quite a few steps to the rooms , if you struggle with breathing ,request lower level.
