We were a gay pair on Crete for a mix of business and pleasure. The business was to go to Minoan ruins at Knossos and Phaistos--which required having a rental car--and pleasure: nude beach bathing and eating excellent local cuisine (e.g., Georgios in Old Hersonissos).
Villa Ralfa is a small place that can handle 6 guests at most. it is on the outskirts of a small touristy town but close to a small village with fantastic cuisine a bit further away from the shore than is Villa Ralfa. It is a bit hard to find (especially if you rely on Google Maps--which frequently is hopelessly wrong with respect to Europe).
Tim, the owner, and Isla the dog are wonderful hosts. They are attentive, helpful, friendly without being intrusive. Tim's analysis of Greek driving habits proved to be extremely healthy on Crete and important for a week of driving around the mountainous Pelopponenses later in our 3 week trip to Greece.
On Friday's Tim serves a BBQ for guests and his friends, and all you have to provede is your own beverages. That was a wondrous time.
After Crete we went to Mykonos, but in retrospect, I wish we had stayed longer in Crete and less so in Mykonos. (We stayed at gay establishments inb both cases).
When I went to Crete, I thought it would be a one time visit to see a couple important ruins. But as our visit to Crete and Villa Ralfa fades, I find myself thinking about coming back to Crete... and of course to Villa Ralfa.
Oh, about the accommodations: It was an apartment with living room, kitchen, bath, and bedroom. Quite satisfactory.
We were so glad we stayed at Villa Ralfa rather than the near-by touristy Port Hersonissos.
