“Wonderful resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

We stayed here with great pleasure. A haven of rest in the hectic India. The garden is an orchid nursery. The setting on the hill is marvellous, and the premises clear, spacious and comfortable. Good food, fast wifi internet (not in the rooms though), and friendly staff.
Norden, the very sympathetic manager and owner, can tell you everything about the region, and has a wise view on life. Kalimpong is a pleasant place.

Room Tip: Higher up rooms have a good view over Kalimpong, and occasionally the Himalaya..

One conversation with the owner of Holumba, Norden, was enough to persuade us that this isn't your average guest house or hotelier. A font of knowledge about all things Nepal, India and The Indian condition, you'll never leave a conversation with him feeling anything other than inspired. That he keeps a charming guest house in the grounds of his orchid nursery with clean comfortable cottage rooms and excellent food is a bonus...

Room Tip: Woodcot suites are a little pricier, but really lovely. For a cuter experience take the top rooms.

I generally choose hotels in unknown places based on Tripadvisor reviews and selected Holumba Haven for this reason but was quite disappointed with what we got. The place clearly states it is not a 5 star hotel and we did not expect one but came back feeling that they are trying to pass off poor maintenance as 'rustic'. We stayed in the most expensive of their cottages but found huge holes in the quilts, stains on the sheets, blankets with no covers so obviously no wash between guests. During a power breakdown, this was the only place with no back-up. Strange for a country that lives on inverters. The fabled food was difficult to get, long wait before anyone served us and this is when only 4 rooms were occupied. Extremely limited breakfast.

This place is quirky and not like your usual hotel which turns out to be a pretty good thing. It is touted as a home stay and indeed you stay in rooms that are part of various houses on the property usually with common use sitting area and in some cases also some other common space. The rooms are homely and definitely not spick and span but they are functional and interesting and all together fun. The property is a plant nursery with green houses and beautiful grounds. I was there is autumn/winter and even then the gardens were lovely but I suspect they are spectacular in spring and summer. The owners are helpful and supply a good map of the area, local information and reasonable meals. The meals are taken in a separate building that has a wood burning stove that takes the chill out of the autumn/winter air. The only down side is that the place is about 1.5 km from the down town area but while this is a bit of a slog it isn't really that far and the charm of the Holumba Haven makes it worth the distance.

Room Tip: The rooms at the top of the stairs are better than those right at the bottom but overall each room h...

Atmospheric and refined. Nestled above the road into Kalimpong market, the Holumba Haven is truly a haven. The family owners take great care of the guests, offering suggestions on places to visit and interesting tales of life in Kalimpong. The room I stayed in was cozy, clean and comfortable. The food was tasty, excellent breakfasts. I ate three meals a day but there was just too much food.

We had very short stay at Houlmba haven due to our hectic trip schedule but cant deny it was worth staying there. Beautiful nice cottages with lots of greenery and marvelous scenic view of Kanchenjunga. Very hospitable staff and great service. We have been told there will be no room service as it's a family business, in-spite of that we got proper room service and complimentary Tea. Delicious meals add value to our stay. To summarize I make following points
1. Area: A best location to stay in Kalimpong
2. Cottages: Nicely built
3. Facilities: Up to the mark
4. Assistance: Very fair

Nice hotel with rooms scattered in between a lot of greenery. We stayed at Treetop room. Beautiful room. Large windows on all sides. Hotel staff was nice and courteous.

If at all I am forced to crib about something, it would be about two separate taps on the wash-basin instead of a single mixer tap. One each for hot and cold water. Water from hot water tap was too hot and the water from cold water tap was too cold making both unusable. But other than this, no complaint whatsoever.

Room Tip: Choose wood-cot room if available
