“On OK place !!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2014

We went to vedanthangal bird sanctuary few months and spent a couple of hours there. Its not really a big attraction. You can see few varieties of birds but if you don't have a binocular, its all the same. The place is not well maintained, so don't expect anything fancy !!!

“Nice Day Trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

We (Me ,my wife and kid) along with my sister's family visited this place. Nice place to visit. Its a perfect day trip. Takes around hour and a half from chennai by car. There are public busses (less frequency ) from chennai and chengalpet. Car is advisable. Road to the sanctuary is good. One thing I observed is that once you the off the highway; the road towards vedanthangal is a 11 KM stretch and it has speed breakers every 50 metres. This is sometime annoying.

There are no good restaurents near by; so its advisable you bring your own food as its allowed. Even in March there were lot of birds and the place was very clean. Children enjoyed a lot and they took lot of pictures for their school scrap book.

Timings are 10 AM to 5 PM.

“Birds of paradise descend at our neighbourhood”

Vedanthangan, a two-hour drive from chennai on the GST road is a real haven for birds and heaven for visitors. It boasts if large number of birds with wide varieties migrating every year fro as far as siberia and Australia. Flamingos, spoonbills, ibis, cormorants, kingfishers, greyherons throng the watershed at vedanthangal. Set amidst the backdrop of two hillocks vedanthangal is a nice 3 hours spend over a weekend. The entry fee is 5/- per adult and 2 per child (3-12) and normal camera 25/- and video camera is 150/-. The car parking is 30/- the entire walkway is filled with trees on both sides and a look above scenes you with kingfishers, indian mynas and other bird varieties. The other side of the bank scenes all the migratory birds. A telescope tower with an attendant help you to have a closer look of the birds, their feeding the youngerones and their eggs etc. a worthy weekend with the winged visitors.

“Spectacular at sunset”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2014

In the right season and the right time, this is a spectacular place. We were there is early January, from 4-6 pm, when the light is shining on the birds and they are returning to the roosts in large numbers. Spot-billed pelicans, egrets, grey herons, painted storks, open-billed storks, night herons, glossy and white ibis, in huge numbers and impossible to miss, plenty of others to see by the sharp-eyed such as several species of kingfishers, golden oriole, bee-eaters, rollers, other waterfowl. Also not to miss, and a great attraction to our kids, were the enormous catfish that come to the surface to feed. We could hardly tear ourselves away. The birds are not close and you will need some seriously long lenses and tripods to get quality shots, and binoculars are a must for any serious birder, but the general quantity of birds, colour and cacophony just make it a nice place to be. How often do you see that many birds in one place after all?

“Birds open arena (binoculars/SLR Cameras) will rock!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

This place is really filled with various kinds of birds during the months of Dec-April....Birds migrate from different corners to hatch eggs here and this place is a real time birds open habitat. Place was clean, simple and with a peaceful setup. The path way along the Sanctuary gives u a really nice walk exposing u to the view of the nests , birds flying all around in the sky. But today i visited with Sony Hx 300 but the 50x zoom fell a bit short of the awesome pics. But still i managed to have some good clicks.

But i was really happy to people see with huge SLR CAMERAS AND BIG LENSES JUST TEARING the whole place with the shutter sounds......it was good to see them taking so many pictures. But i tell u the best camera is our eye thru which the view was superb, we sat near two view points and it was so peaceful and nostalgic to hear the rhyming of all the birds.

Road to the place is fine, Decent time spent for half a day, we were able to enjoy seeing the variety of birds,a big zoom camera is needed.

Please have a taste of the ginger tea sold outside the gate ; it was the best. They say tat the villagers of tat village fought to protect this place for 100 years , then some where in 1966 govt recognized it.The water after left over by the birds is very good for farmers and they use it as fertilizers.

So worth visiting if u hit at the right time(dec-JAN)
