“Traditional Paintings @ 10th of its price in Metros”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

Meet dedicated artists who have learnt the tradfitional art-form from their seniors in the family. The offerings are quite cheap in terms of money but each piece is state-of-art. Must visit site

“As far as Art is concerned, this is a must visit place...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

As I said,as far as art is concerned, this place is a must visit location.
It is basically a hamlet comprising quite a few thatched huts and small houses where number of painters paint beautiful miniature paintings depicting usually mythology and other things.
While going from Bhubaneshwar to Puri by road, this place is located off the NH 203 on the left hand side, just before you enter Puri area.
Road condition is not so good and few places would embarrass really wide-bodied cars.
The Art work showcased is really good stuff and quite steeply priced usually . Be prepared to bargain a lot before settling down on a particular amount. It does work.

“Legacy of Creativity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

If you have the penchant for moving off the beaten track, if you want to explore the rural heartland of Odisha, if you want to revel yourself in the distinctive rural lifestyle, redolent of art, craft, culture and natural heritage, then Raghurajpur is the place to be in. The visitors come here not only to see a typical Odishan village from very close quarters but also to enjoy the rich tradition of Odishan Art & Crafts at one place. It has a community of artisans who produce different verities of handicraft items like patta paintings, palm leaf engraving, wooden toys, tusser paintings etc. Perhaps no where else in India one finds such a huge congregation of so many art forms at one place. The village has 123 house hold having 376 artists. The artistic overtures of Raghurajpur is also complemented by a living tradition of performing art known as Gotipua, the original form of Odissi.

“Must visit, must bargain!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Located 12-13 kms away from Puri, the drive from Puri to Raghurajpur is smooth with fairly good roads. The village is very small… about a 15 – 20 minutes walk if you just pass thru all houses.

From the moment you park your vehicle outside, the artisans and their family members will gather around you and will try to convince you to visit their house first. Don’t get irritated with their continuous nagging calls as this is what they do for a living!

There are houses lined on both ends with some temples and broken structures in the middle acting like dividers. It is amazing to see that every house has at least one member who is a fantastic artist. On the doors and walls of the houses you will see the first glimpse of the painting skills. From beautiful, multihued depictions of the daily life to episodes from the Hindu Epics of Ramayan & Mahabharat… it’s all over the wall!!

The workshops & small sit out areas have a nice display of their art works like palm leaf painting, painting on fabrics, painted glass bottles, painted coconuts, small painted wooded animal toys like elephants, camels, cows, etc and even god & goddess like Ganesh etc. After seeing 3-4 houses it becomes repetitive as 95% of the items you see will be the same that you would have seen in the previous houses. This may kill you enthu of sneak peaking into all the houses.

The palm leaf paintings were super expensive. We understood this only once we visited Pipili (a village famous for it's appliqué work) about 30 kms from Raghurajpur. These same painting items were available in retail shops there at 25% of the villagers quoted price (that too MRP… bargaining was further possible). So if you intend to buy from the villagers, do bargain hard. If they say Rs. 100 for an item, start the bargain from Rs. 25!! By bargaining, you are not disrespecting their art rather just asking for a fair price for the product you wish to buy.
