Chilika is located at distance of aroung 55 Km from Puri. It generally takes around 90 minutes by road to reach Satpada village on the bank of the Chilika. Once in Satpada, one can hire a small boat for around 1200-1800 rupees for 4-8 hrs and can enjoy the lake.
The most important attraction of Chilika is birds. However if you are not going to be there during bird watching season,(like us), you can at least see dolphins. Once in the boat, the boatman took us directly to the area where dolphin could be seen. We could see the dolphins only partially and all of them were black. Although we spent almost half an hour , we could not see beak of any of the dolphins. As a result my wife doubted whether they were really dolphins. Coming back to Puri, we saw some paintings of dolphins in the city and those dolphins did not have a beak. We though those painters probably had never seen a complete dolphin ! Finally after coming to hotel, I did some google and ultimately found that Chilika has Irrawaddy Dolphins : Dark in colour and without beak !
After watching Dolphins we moved towards seamouth, this is the place where Chilika Lake meets Bay of Bengal. On the way to seamouth we could see water in different colours green, sky blue, blue. The water was so clean that we could see bottom of the lake even at the depth of 10 ft.
Sea Mouth has some restaurants where one can enjoy local sea food. After walking through sand for 15 min one reaches the Beach. The beach is quite free from crowd and therefore very much clean. Overall visiting Chilika is a great experience and a must for a visitor of Puri.
