The Ri Kynjai bills itself as "Serenity by the lake" but in our opinion it was anything but!
I have read the manager's response to the other scathing review he got, but I have to say that I found nothing to disagree with.
We checked in to a superior room as part of a 22 strong tour group for a two night stay. The rooms are big and clean with huge bathrooms and great views from the window and balcony over the lake. Here end the good bits....
It is cold in these rooms in November and there is no heating apart from a three bar electric fire. On our's one the bars didn't work but the high ceilings would have made it useless anyway.
The bed had only a thin quilt and a single pillow. We walked down to reception and asked for a blanket. Two arrived about five minutes later and it took about the same amount of time to get the man who brought it out of the room - he absolutely was not leaving without a tip. When we eventually shooed him from the room, he lurked about outside the door and wouldn't go away!
Dinner that night was a disaster - cold fish and chips from a buffet served up with warm beer. Both were sent back!
True to say that food is poor, service as slow and booze is vastly overpriced - R1400 for a bottle of indifferent red wine that we got for R975 at the last stop - and that was pricey!
Beware - they put a bottle of water in the room and charge you if you use it. There is supposed to be a jug of water for making coffee and tea but that was empty, so you had to use the bottled water.
And to top it all off, they add a 20% luxury tax to everything you buy - so that puts the plonk up to R1680.
Our tour manager warned us that the service and management are 'not very good' before we booked in. That was an understatement....

- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Ri Kynjai translates into Khasi as land of serenity. This Spa-Resort presiding over the picturesque Umiam lake 16kms from Shillong is aptly named "Ri Kynjai - Serenity By The Lake". The architecture is inspired and derived from the original Khasi thatch huts. Supported on tall circular stilts on the terrace of the hotel blocks are the hybrid cottages derived from vernacular Khasi architecture. These cottages serve to portray the transition from tradition to modernity and have an interpretation of the traditional upturned boat roof done in metallic thatch fused to modern gables. Each cottage has a fireplace in the living/ bedroom area and the mezzanine floor has an additional bedroom arrangement. ... more less
