I have visited Matheran 5 times but it has always fascinated me.. the
fact that there are no vehicles allowed in this hill station makes it
an ideal place for a quite getaway.. Ofcourse a lot depends on the
hotel you choose and thats the reason why i have always chosen Regal
Unlike some other well know hotels which have DJs , Rain dances and
other noisy celebrations 365 days a year, Regal has always been a
quite family place.. The food here is really good although it is not
consistent.. The staff is generally courteous, although the manager
was not so friendly and cooperative.. You can sit in the verandah
reading a book, chatting or have a swim in the pool, play TT in the
games room or play badminton... We had stayed at the regal cottage
which was clean nice and spacious... Regal has an excellent location ,
it is 2 mins walk from the market and just about 5 mins from the
For weekend packages staring from 5k onwards, its a pretty good
deal...Quite place, family crowd, veg food, no drunkards, cleanliness
and friendly staff makes it a truly wonderful experience...
Dont forget to take a discount on the packages, at least they will waive off the tax component.. In monsoons and especially on weekdays, if you just walkin to the hotel you may get a better discount.
The weather in Matheran was chilly and the long walks, the horse rides
made it a lovely trip... U can go walking to the various points
giving spectacular views.. You can just go and sit at the lakeside ,
eating corn... Or just shop in the market which has greatly developed
over the years... You can buy Chappals, Purses and some antiques and
You can reach Matheran by road or by train. You can take a local train to Neral and then take the taxis which ply up to Matheran and take about 30 mins and they charge around 50/60 Rs. per head.. The only flip side is that you need to walk the 3/4 kms from the check naka to the market which can take 45 mins, or take a horse ride or the hand pulled rickshaws to your hotel.
You can also take the toy train (not available during 4 months of monsoon) all the way upto the Matheran market. But you need to book your tickets in advance for this toy train..
All in all its an amazing place.. The best time to visit is monsoon, but if u dont want to get wet. winter is also a nice time to be there..
