“Excellent Place for couple”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2012

We stayed at this place in April 2012 for 4 days.
Natural and rustic environment.
Service and atmosphere is very good.
Food is damn good. Rates are also quite reasonable.
Manager Mr. Eknath and Owner Mr. Rusi both are very helpful.
Market place is at 10-15 mins walking distance.
Peaceful place to enjoy your vacation.

To make this easy I am going to break down this review -

Location - Cecil is about a 10 minute walk from the main Market area which means there are no shops or restaurants nearby. This is a huge positive for someone who is looking for solitude, silence or perhaps a place away from the Hustle and Bustle of the main market.

On the other hand if you are a shopaholic or wish to eat out or perhaps have aged persons travelling along with you this might be a pain.

Ambience - The Hotel is a very old property and consists of a number of Row Houses which house the rooms. Each Room has a verandah outside where one can sit down and just laze around. Works great for nature lovers who just want to laze around and enjoy the sounds of nature.

Rooms - Rooms are pretty basic, with sparse furnishings. Please dont expect any luxurious beds, Satellite Television, Phones or luxurious decor. The Rooms that I stayed in had beds with white bedsheets, a bathroom with an ante-room with dressing table. There is no running hot water but you can get a bucket of hot water every morning at 7:30 delivered to your room.

Other Facilities - There is a Badminton Court on the premises and also indoor games like Table Tennis and Carrom. The TT table though was in a derelict state though and quite useless for playing. Also adjacent to the Badminton court was a small childrens garden. Overall a big plus if you got kids.

Food - Food is the main USP of the hotel. They serve delicious vegetarian fare!

Service - The proprietor Mr Russi Irani is a true Gentlemen and you almost immediately feel at home when you speak to him. The man is extremely approachable and informed us that he would be available for planning any trips or sightseeing though we did not have an opportunity to do so. The rest of the staff is courteous but sometimes need to be hounded for getting things done.

Price - When I stayed there during the weekend I was charged 2500 INR per room which seems a little high for the facilities provided.

Summing it up - the place is great for families and couples who just want to relax and enjoy themselves in a nice cosy ambience. If you are the kind of person who however wishes to remain close to all the modern comforts you might just want to give this place a skip! Probably a little refurbishing could do a world of good for the place!

I am looking forward to visiting this place during the rains!

I visit this hotel in Nov-11. The experience is not good.
Only choose this hotel if you get it at Rs. 1800 per day including Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
This is a very old kind of hotel. Even not having the Ring bell or phone to call any room service. It doesnt look the way it is on Net. The rooms, bathroom are below expectation.
The only good thing is the food.
Hence my advice is keep it as the last choice or rather avoid this.

Room Tip: Dont waste your Money here...

Dear All; I have chosen this hotel to celebrate my second wedding anniversary and I must say biggest contribution to make it memorable was from this hotel.
Food is awsome (Big no no if your are hard core non vegetarian fan);
Staff is co operative;
Campus is full of trees and natural beauty;
rooms are neat and clean
last but not the least; Personal touch of hotel owner (Mr. Rusi Irani)
If you want pleasant stay in Matheran please go for cecil

Cecil is a lovely property nestled away from the buzz in a secluded wooded part of Matheran yet not far from Bazar Peth, the main promenade of Matheran. It is an old property with spacious grounds and very friendly staff and personalized service. The thing I like most about Cecil is the personal touch of the owner who stays on the property. The other unique thing is the absence of phones and the use of a hand bell to call for services. No matter how faint the bell sounds, your help comes within minutes!! Cecil tariff includes all three meals which are all vegetarian and freshly prepared. Staff accomodates requests for less spicy food for children and food fit for people with indifferent digestion. All you have to do is request for it in advance. The table tennis and badminton facilities are a hit among children and located just outside the dining area. Most rooms have 4 beds indicating the hotel's preference for guest with families. I keep going back there to enjoy a short break with family.

Room Tip: Always go online and secure a room in advance. Cecil is almost always full even in the rains.

It is a very old hotel nestled in the lush green woods of Matheran. The hotel structure is pretty old, but still decently maintained. The large open areas offer big playing areas for your children. The food is decent though lacks variety, and simple food - home style. This hotel is close to the market area and the railway station. Overall good if you want to enjoy being lazy on a weekend.
