Upon writing this review, I had to keep in mind that I am strictly judging the hotel, and not the town of Elyria. That being said, this hotel is probably the best you will find in this location.
PURPOSE: I was looking for a clean, easy, and safe hotel to stay in with plans of going to Cedar Point in Sandusky the next morning. Apparently, about 3 of the hotel's whopping 15 guests had the same idea, granted that I saw them all at the park the next day. Most guests residing at the hotel were families. The hotel served its purpose, and with the tight budget of a Pre-Med student, it cost me significantly less than any hotel in Sandusky would have. For this, I was very pleased.
ROOMS: I found rooms to be more spacious than many Country Inn's, consisting not only of a sleeping area but also a flat screen TV, and a large seating area with a couch and arm chair. The beds and pillows were comfortable. Bathrooms were also moderately sized, with good water pressure (especially in reference to the toilet, which is so loud and powerful that I jumped when it flushed; kudos if you are able to clog that one). The door to the room was very difficult to open from the outside, but oddly enough I liked that because it made me feel safer.
HOTEL: It's your typical Country Inn. Free cookies were replaced relatively quickly, which always makes me a very happy traveler. The pool area had a unique feature of handicap access for guests in wheelchairs, which I thought was something nice. Although the hot tub was working fine, the pool was broken; the manager was visibly stressed about this and it was very clear that he wanted it fixed. There were security camera's placed in the hallways for safety precautions.
BREAKFAST: Complementary breakfast was better than I thought it would be. I was impressed by the amount of toppings (whipped cream, syrups, etc) they had for the array of items up for selection. Hot foods (eggs, waffles, sausages, etc.) were served, along with the other 'usuals'. The breakfast staff was very friendly, pleasant, and helpful. Some of the oranges were a little old but a few things like that are destined to happen.
PARKING: Parking was easy and free.
CONS and/or ODDITIES: The ambiance was nothing short of lovely, with the the neighboring building being a 'Correctional & Alcohol Rehabilitation Facility'. (Funny enough, the building connected to that, was a nightclub!!) There was a mild, but odd scent to the hotel and the rooms. One of the employees was walking around in socks after their shift, lol... Also, there was a hole in the comforter from a cigarette burn, but this is very common among hotels.
SAFETY: Being a woman in my 20's, I always take safety during travel very seriously. Because I found the town so desolate and odd, I would not stay in Elyria alone. I was traveling with my boyfriend, who is a US Marine, so I definitely felt safe with him there. There wasn't any strange activity occurring outside or around the hotel, although I found one of the employees to be a little weird.
ELYRIA: I felt like this city was dying. My boyfriend and I describe it as a place that seems like it was at one point nuked, with the population consisting of solely the lone, quiet survivors. There is a Wendy's across the street from the hotel and a Red Lobster less than 1 mile down the road. There is also a shopping mall, but most of the stores in it are closed down. Overall if you are using this location as a midpoint for travel or business, it is a decent choice and most likely the best this city has to offer! They really did the best they could with what they had.
