“OK Choice at the Airport”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2006

A decent choice if you need to stay at the airport or be in proximity to the East Side of Columbus. It's a cookie-cutter Hilton Garden Inn. Smallish rooms with adequate amenities. Friendly service. They still need to fix the front entrance, though. It looks tacky.

This is the first Hilton Garden Inn I've stayed in. Overall, my impression is that this is a good choice of a chain hotel for a business traveler. My rate was $110/night during prime business weekdays. There's a Hampton Inn next door that shares the same parking lot. The only retail establishment within the immediate area is McDonalds. There was major damage to the hotel front door area recently by a delivery truck. However, I expect this would be fixed long before most travelers reading this would visit

Room Amenities:
- Microwave, Mini fridge, coffee maker, real glasses/coffee mugs not plastic cups
- Workdesk generously sized with task lamp
- Ergonomic desk chair (delivered brand new during my stay)
- AC power and wired and wireless internet connection at table level (no need to crawl under the table to plug in the laptop). Bring your own Ethernet cable and/or wireless card for your laptop.
- Window AC/Heater unit, updated with wall-mounted thermostat
- Window that slides open a few inches for fresh air
- Two, two-lines telephones, one with speakerphone
- Easy chair, TV
- Bathroom with steel tub, fiberglass surround

Room decorations:
- These are a pleasing scheme to me. The wood furniture is of medium tone, green/tan carpeting scheme, white painted walls/ceilings, and wallpapered bath. The decorations appear mostly fresh.
- The room had a faint smell of smoke even though it's supposed to be a nonsmoking room. This was taken care of easily by running the fan and opening the window a bit (I really like windows that open and they are becoming a rarity).

Hotel Amenities:
- Limited service restaurant providing breakfast (continental with made-to-order egg/meat dishes for additional charge), also providing room service for breakfast and dinner (restaurant not open for dinner)
- Tiny business center with remote printer capability (print to web url from your room, retrieve via email address/job number key from business center pc).
- Side pantry in lobby area with various sundries/drinks for sale
- Small lobby gas fireplace lounge area to the side of the breakfast eating area - pleasant for waiting/talking with traveling companions.
- Cookies each evening at the front desk
- Front desk staff more helpful than most. I observed them taking extra time to help out customers several times.
- Free shuttle bus that makes the rounds among the airport hotels.
- Indoor pool (guest keycard will not open door after 10pm)
- Fitness center (guest keycard will not open door after 10pm)

Noise factors:
- This hotel is located between the runways of Columbus Airport. As such, you should expect considerable airplane noise. However, the airport also does not have much if any overnight traffic, so there isn't much airplane noise from midnight to 6am. It's not as noisy as you might expect from this location, perhaps because no airplanes actually fly directly over the hotel to land.
- The heating/AC unit is of the undesirable window design that is quite noisy. Perhaps, the fan noise will mask out some of the airplane traffic for many people.
- Walls and ceiling appear to be drywall, not concrete, so neighbor noise could be a
factor. It was not a problem for me personally, however.

I stayed at this hotel for one night for business purposes. The staff were friendly, and check-in was very efficient. The location is excellent if you have a flight. This hotel seemed to be about the same price and better quality than other hotels in this same area, and this was a correct assumption.

The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. The only noise was from the airplanes flying overhead, but the noise was tuned out by the fan (e.g., A/C, heater).

The breakfast at the hotel was like most breakfasts at hotels, and there was a very good variety of food.

This is an excellent place to stay and I would recommend it to others. I would likely stay here again if I had a flight out of or into Columbus.

I originally planned to stay at the Hampton Inn next door, but stayed here after reading a review that indicated the HI was getting a bit worn out, and the rates were similar (HI appears to charge for parking ($5/day) for some of its rates, but HGI does not - don't understand that, because there are no signs in the parking lot they share and you are not asked to register your vehicle on check-in). Hotel is new and clean, rooms are spacious and attractive, and airport noise is unnoticeable, given the proximity to the landing strip. You get bottled water and the pantry off the lobby is well-stocked. There is an airport shutttle. I didn't have the breakfast, and there is room service in the evening.

Fitness room consists of two treadmills, an elliptical trainer and bike and one TV, or you can use the full-facility gym two doors down for $5/day (HI lets you use it for free, but does not have its own exercise room). Business center has high-speed internet, printer, copier, and fax, but computer does not appear to allow PDF files to be printed.

All in all, a good value and comfortable environment for the road warrior, and close to airport and interstate to downtown Columbus.
