Alright, listen. This is one of the best Hampton Inn's I have ever stayed at in the past. I historically travel to Columbus on business more than anywhere else. I have probably stayed at 10 different Hilton properties in the Columbus area over the last 15 years, and usually at this Hampton Inn. That said, my stay there last week was probably the worst hotel experience I've ever had while on business due to the construction.
I was late making a hotel reservation to be downtown for a technical summit at the convention center across the street. Rate - $189. Pretty stiff for a Hampton, but it's a great location, and as I said one of the best I've ever stayed at. BUT, no mention of the construction (that was going on last year at the same time!) on the website. I could have gotten into the even nicer, new Hilton a few doors down, but I decided to save $20/night, which was a mistake.
I was on the seventh floor. The first day I had a conference call for about 2 hours in my room. In the hall were cables, wires, etc. running the length of the hall, and very frequently, men shouting loud enough that people on my call could hear it.
The second morning, I also had a call, and went down to the breakfast area later than usual. I sat near a construction tarp that shielded the area from the dusty area behind where men were working. One of the construction workers came over and unzipped the tarp to get something and out came dust, right onto my breakfast. He did this twice.
There was also construction in the lobby, which is not that big of a deal. The folding door on my closet is part of the new construction. It must have been put in wrong because I could only open it about 4 inches. I also didn't get my 2 diamond Hilton honors waters at check in.
The pillows were very firm and comfortable. Good change. The upgrades to the bathroom with high-end fixtures, etc. are very nice upgrade. They rival the bathroom appointments at the nearby Hilton which is less than a year old. As usual, the people working there were great, however the two times I asked to see the general manager, he was not available. The location is great - convention center, downtown, nice restaurants, Short North, etc., are all close.
Overall - When they get the construction completed I'm sure this Hampton will still continue to hold the title of "Best" Hampton Inn that I frequent. But, charging a premium during major, disruptive construction and not letting your customers know it is bad business. I've seen other Hilton properties and other brands under construction offer discounts noting the construction on their websites. This makes the customer aware and allows them to make a decision on whether to stay and put up with it, or move to another property, AND buys good will. Not letting me know about the construction and sticking it to me on the price because a convention is in town (hosted by AEP, which is probably this hotels 1st or 2nd largest business to drive traffic to this location) makes me have second thoughts about this Hampton and Hilton in general.
So, my advice is call to make sure the construction is completed, and don't plan to eat breakfast there or plan to work in your room if you do.
Get a room facing Spruce street. Hign street can get pretty loud.

Thank you for taking the time to give us a review of your recent stay with us. I am very appreciative that you think this Hampton is one of the best you have stayed in! With that said, I am very disappointed to hear your recent stay is one of the worst experiences you have had.
The first day you were here the cables down the hallway were those of our carpet cleaners as we were having our monthly carpet cleaning done that afternoon. I will be sure to discuss with them the loud conversations they were having.
My deepest apologies regarding your breakfast experience. The lack of care by the construction crew is unacceptable and will be handled appropriately.
I also want apologize that I was not available to meet with you the two times you asked for me. I would have loved to discuss everything with you in person. However, if you would still like to discuss your stay further, please feel free to contact me at your convenience as I would also like for your next stay with us to be on me.
Thank you again for the time you took to share your experience!
